Had a very intense meeting between the Owner, the Project Manager, and the Tile Setter today (all me). 💼🛠️The setter demanded 360-degree bass and maximum airflow to survive this condo layout. The owner approved the budget instantly. Thinset dries fast, but the crew works faster now! 😂🙌

Most of you know, I started my business right around a year ago.
Today, I can officially say I made it through year one—and I started year two by taking on the biggest project I’ve ever tackled.
This project is through a company I’ve developed a really great relationship with, and it’s part of the rebuild of a condo that was severely damaged by a lightning-strike fire.
Out of curiosity, I looked up when the fire happened.
It happened almost exactly one year ago.
The same time I was taking the leap and starting this business, this building was being destroyed. A year later, I’m here helping rebuild it.
Coincidence, or a God wink?
I don’t know. But I do know I’m pretty grateful for where this first year has taken me, for the people who have trusted me with their projects, and for the relationships I’ve built along the way.
Year one is in the books. Let’s see what year two brings.

Had a brutal performance review with my boss today. He basically told me to get back to mixing thinset. 💀The Conversation:
Me: "Boss, I need a raise. Inflation is real."
Boss: "Not in the budget, buddy."
Me: "Alright, what do I need to do to get it there?"
Boss: "You're Head of Marketing. Go get us some more tile jobs."
Me: "I'm grinding nonstop. The phone is ringing off the hook."
Boss: "Great. You're Head of Sales, too. Go measure the floors and close the deals."
Me: "Done. I’ve promptly sent out every quote and signed the contracts."
Boss: "Excellent. You're Project Manager. Get the crews scheduled and the material delivered."
Me: "Calendar is booked out for months. Crews are working at maximum capacity."
Boss: "Perfect. Keep doing that and we’ll look at a raise once it's in the budget.

Being your own boss is wild. I want to fight the guy, but I also need him to drive me home tonight. 🚙💨

🧱 Overcoming the 1/4" Challenge! 🧱
Remember those gorgeous patterned tiles that arrived with a tricky 1/4” variance in size? A lot of installers would have thrown in the towel, but Back Tile Services stepped up to the plate!Yes, mapping out a repeating geometric design with uneven material made our eyes twitch more than a few times. 🫣 But look at this finished result! By meticulously adjusting the spacing and balancing the layout, the final pattern lines up beautifully across the entire floor. We take pride in making the impossible look seamless. Would we take on a challenging puzzle like this again? Absolutely. 🛠️

Some of my favorite end results. Tile in itself is a test of multi skill-sets. Add in complex layouts, borders, or completely custom designs and the results are stunning 🤩

"Just slap the tile up, it’s a simple grid pattern!" 😅Behind the scenes of a beautiful layout is the reality of non-rectified, pressed-edge tiles. With up to a 1/4” variance in size and shapes that are nowhere near a perfect 90-degree square, these patterns turn into a real-life puzzle.
Shoutout to all the real installers out there fighting the warp to make sure the final result looks like a masterpiece. Happy tiling! ☕💪

A flat floor is made — not assumed. 🔨
This project started with an existing concrete slab that needed meticulous preparation before tile could ever be installed.
Swipe through the process ➡️
📸 Before: The existing concrete floor was painted and had numerous hairline cracks and uneven areas that needed to be addressed before installation.
📸 Surface preparation: We mechanically prepared the concrete using a concrete planer connected to a dust collection system. Proper surface preparation is critical for getting the best possible bond with the materials that follow.
📸 Containing the self-leveler: We used expanding spray foam around the perimeter of the room to create a temporary dam and keep the self-leveling material exactly where it needed to go.
📸 Self-leveling: Once the floor was properly prepared and contained, self-leveling compound was installed to create a flat, consistent surface for the tile installation.
📸 Crack isolation: After the leveler cured, we applied a crack isolation membrane over the entire floor. With the amount of existing hairline cracking in the slab, this additional step helps prevent those cracks from transferring through the tile assembly and eventually telegraphing through to the finished tile.
📸 Layout: With the floor properly prepared, we used a laser and the actual tile to establish the layout before installation. This allowed us to plan the pattern, maintain straight lines, and strategically place cuts throughout the room.
📸 Finished product: All of that preparation ultimately gets covered up — but it's what creates the foundation for a clean, durable finished floor.
A lot of the most important work in a tile installation is the work you'll never see once the project is finished.
Grinding.
Leveling.
Crack isolation.
Layout.
Preparation.
That's what makes the finished tile look good — and helps it stay that way.
Quality craftsmanship starts from the ground up.

Precision is everything in this game. 📐

When you have to start laying tile down a recessed hallway and work your way backward to seamlessly meet up with the existing floor, it really tests your math skills—especially with a running bond pattern! A fraction of an inch off at the start means a total nightmare by the time you close the gap.Measure twice, mix once, and trust the process. Swipe to see how we keep our lines laser-straight. 🎯

Yes. We cheat and use the raimondi leveling system. 🤫
