Morning harvest. We’re still learning our ways around the watermelon. They’ve grown too big, too watery and not very sweet. We need to fix that. This year, we grew (my Liberian people gather here 😜)bitterballs and molokhia on our first try. The beans also did well. Melons and squashes and cucumbers, tomatoes and peppers are always a hit around here.

We’ve had some decent rain the last couple weeks and the plants are thriving out here on the homestead. Radishes are ready, so are the collard greens and strawberries. April Mae and Dama B are constantly having strawberry banana smoothie to stay cool in this Texas heat. And did I mention that we’re having some promising luck with growing bitter balls and Molokhia (palava leaves) out here?! The Liberian girl in me is stoked!

Happenings around the homestead: Plants are ready to leave the heat lamp and go outdoors for some natural sunlight, but our panhandle weather isn’t ready for them yet. We’re impatient. By we, I mean April😝. She’s been itching to get out there and I’m sure, by the time I get home from work this weekend, we’ll have these babies in the ground. This year, we’re trying varieties of vegetables from the motherlands: Liberia and The Phillipines. As always, the garden is for everyone. Join us whenever you can, to plant, w**d, harvest or gather eggs. We love company out here. And April built the prettiest farm house table to fit 8 friends comfortably. Thats plenty of room! First round of incubator for the season is going, because, there’s no such thing as too many chickens around here. We’re also looking forward to breaking grounds on the greenhouse this summer, so if you happened to have old windows and glass doors laying around, for cheap or (preferably) free, let us know and we’ll get them off your hands for our reclaimed greenhouse. This is another project we’ll be doing ourselves , so if you’d like to join us, learn a thing or two, you’re more than welcome. We’re so thrilled for a new gardening season and the many new possibilities ahead.

April has been home the last few days battling an illness. She garnered enough strength today to plant couple apple trees, some cassava (yucca) sticks and sort through her box of seeds, in preparation for planting season. We’re looking forward to planting some vegetables that are native to our homelands (Liberia and The Philippines). Hopefully we can open up our kitchen to you all for a tasting on a beautiful summer evening in the very near future

Happenings around the garden this week:
Prepping garden beds, so we can start the planting season early. We spent most of the last season building garden beds and prepping the soil. Because of that, we planted late and lost all of the watermelons and lots of pumpkins and squashes and tomatoes when the first freeze happened. What a loss, for all the work we put in. The carrots are still doing good with the temperature drop. So looking forward to planting and being outside again.

We nursed the girl child today and fed the chickens some weather damaged cantaloupes. If you’ve got pumpkins you’re going to throw away this season, call us to pick up. The chickens love some pumpkins as well.
