Island sinks look simple from above. Underneath is a different story.

Unlike a standard sink, there's no wall to vent through, so the drain and vent system has to be engineered differently. A loop vent routes up and back inside the cabinet to keep airflow right. Get it wrong and you've got slow drains, gurgling, and sewer odors in your kitchen.

This is the work that disappears behind cabinet doors. That's the point.

That's John. He's about four feet underground, inside a tunnel that runs 101 feet beneath a house in Amarillo.

This is what drain repair looks like when cast iron pipes under a slab have reached the end of their life. You don't jackhammer the floors. You tunnel.

A hole gets cut in the garage floor, the crew digs down and follows the sewer line every branch and turn, old cast iron comes out, new PVC goes in. This homeowner actually crawled every inch of the tunnel himself. He was curious what was happening under his house.

Cast iron drain pipes in homes built before the 1980s are aging out. The signs are easy to miss: recurring stoppages, a plumber pulling back mud or roots, backups that affect every fixture in the house at once. A camera scope tells you what's down there before anyone picks up a shovel.
