Should you apply mulch in the fall?

: Mulching in the fall is beneficial for most properties.

If your flowerbeds still have a three-inch layer of mulch, you don’t need to add mulch in the fall. However, if you’re short on mulch, adding a thick layer can help protect perennials and root systems in harsh temperatures.

Fall Mulching in Three Simple Steps:
✅ Measure your current mulch. If it’s three inches deep, there is no need to add more.

âś… Apply mulch after the first hard frost but before the ground freezes solid (typically late-October to mid-November in Ohio).

âś… Avoid placing mulch around plant stems and tree trunks; keep mulch three inches away.

Fall is here, and it’s time to turn your attention to your yard and landscaping.

Here is a quick checklist to ensure your landscape is ready for harsh winter months.

✔️ Mulch around shrubs and perennials.
Most people know this should be done in the spring, but a fall layer of mulch can help insulate root systems. This helps shrubs and perennials during harsh winter weather.

✔️ Keep leaves under control.
When leaves fall, they can clog gutters and smother your grass, killing grass underneath. Be sure to keep leaves raked throughout the fall.

✔️ Seed and fertilize your lawn.
Fall is the perfect time to add grass seed to dead or bare spots in your yard. It’s also an optimal time to fertilize cool-season grasses.

✔️ Trim perennials.
Trimming perennials not only looks cleaner, but it also helps the plant store energy through the dormant season (boosting the plant’s strength in the spring).

✔️ Prune trees.
Pruning tress in a dormant state reduces damage to the tree. By removing damaged/weak limbs, you’ll help limit risks from tree/property damage when heavy ice and snow may cause the limb to fall.
