Can a Storm-Damaged Tree Be Saved? 🌀🌳

In June 2026, severe thunderstorms tore up Burke and left over 600 customers without power. Even though the trees that came down were removed within days, the harder questions involved the ones still standing. Can a tree with a torn limb, split branch union, or damaged canopy recover, or has the storm caused enough damage that it needs to come down?

What happens next depends on more than how bad the tree looks after the storm. The location and extent of the damage, the structure that remains, and the tree’s condition before the storm all factor into whether recovery is realistic.

Why Is My Tree Turning Brown in Summer? 🌳🍂

By the middle of summer, many Northern Virginia homeowners notice their trees don’t look as healthy as they did just a few weeks earlier. Leaves develop brown, crispy edges, the canopy begins to thin, and some leaves may even drop before fall. It’s enough to make anyone wonder: Why is my tree turning brown in summer?

In many cases, the culprit is heat and drought stress rather than a dying tree. That’s an important distinction because while summer scorch is often something a healthy tree can recover from, similar symptoms can also signal a more serious problem. Fortunately, a few simple observations can help you tell the difference and decide whether your tree needs a deep watering, continued monitoring, or an inspection from an ISA Certified Arborist.

What Dead Branches on Your Tree Could Mean 🪵🌳

In July 2024, a 100-year-old oak in Washington DC's Garfield Park dropped a huge limb without any warning and a woman walking beneath it was killed. Not long after, local officials began investigating summer branch drop syndrome as the cause. The worst part—it didn't happen in a freak weather event; it was a hot, calm summer day that's typical in Northern Virginia June through August.

The risk level of dead branches varies from species to species. Lower deadwood in a tulip poplar is common and could be a sign of a potential beetle infestation in a Virginia pine, or the initial sign of a systemic root problem in a red maple. In Fairfax and Arlington counties, you're probably faced with one of four species, and deadwood means something different on each.
