We usually renovate homes for our clients.

This time, we’re renovating our own office.

After years of working in a space without windows, we’re opening things up, adding natural light, and creating a better place for our team and clients.

This is why old brick walls fail.
In Old Town Alexandria, many historic brick homes were built with softer, breathable mortar, not modern high Portland cement mortar.
When the wrong mortar is used, it can be too hard for old brick. Instead of the mortar taking the stress, the brick does.
The result? Spalling, cracking, and permanent damage.
We break down why mortar matters for historic brick homes in Alexandria in our latest blog.

Old Town Alexandria has a distinct architectural language, and once you know what to look for, the streetscape starts to read differently.

Understanding that character can make remodeling decisions clearer too.

What started as a simple brick repair in Old Town Alexandria turned into something much deeper.
A bowing facade revealed years of hidden structural damage beneath the surface, the kind you don’t see until you start asking the right questions.
That’s the reality of working on historic homes.

Scroll through the post to see pics of the process including templates that were needed for shop fabricating the pine and mahogany frame. Props to Mandal, Tom, Kimhy, Yovani, Isaias, and the rest of the Rust Co production team on this one.
