How do you update a 1950s bathroom without designing the 1950s right out of it? You lean into what made it special.

The Albany, NY homeowners didn't want a trendy bathroom that could belong in any house. They wanted something that still felt like theirs. Designers Hilary Justino and Sarah McDonald embraced the home's retro roots with sage green Marazzi Zellige Neo tile, matching green cabinetry, ceramic k***s, and a warm gold wall color. The horizontal stacked tile makes the smaller footprint feel wider.

It works as well as it looks: a walk-in shower replaced the tub, the linen closet was reworked for storage, and a new double vanity gives them room to live. Our favorite detail? Pull-down faucets chosen to make bathing their foster kittens easier.

Older Capital Region homes have charm, and they also come with variables that can affect a kitchen remodel's scope and cost in ways square footage alone won't predict. Outdated wiring, plumbing built for a different layout, decades of settling, and "layers" from past remodels can all surface once demolition begins.

This is one of those kitchens that seems to have many stories to tell. Dark brown cabinetry, dated lighting elements, wallpaper that has seen many home-cooked meals, and even an old rotary phone still hanging on the wall. But the homeowners were looking for a new chapter for this space.

With Project Manager Anthony Mulligan and Designer Sarah McDonald leading the transformation, the focus went beyond simply updating the finishes. The homeowners wanted a kitchen that flowed better, offered more storage, and made everyday moments feel a little easier. We opened the doorway to the dining room, creating a stronger connection between the two spaces, while a new peninsula kept a cozy spot for morning coffee or a quick breakfast.

The existing pantry was removed and replaced with cabinetry, allowing us to relocate the stove and create a more functional cooking zone. The refrigerator found a new home on another wall, surrounded by cabinetry that added a significant amount of storage. We even incorporated a second oven, perfect for those family holidays when one oven is never quite enough.

And those dark cabinets? They gave way to warm stained maple, bringing a lighter, more inviting feel to the entire room. The rotary phone may have seen a few decades of family life, but this kitchen is ready for the memories still to come.

We're excited to announce that we've been named a winner of the 48th Annual Qualified Remodeler Magazine Master Design Awards Contest with an award for this bathroom in Guilderland, NY! 👏

Built as part of a full basement remodel, this bath was designed as a retreat after a workout or a long day. A steam shower turns a simple rinse into something closer to a spa visit. A wall-mounted toilet and floating walnut vanity keep the floor clear so a below-grade room still feels open. Large-format tile brings the drama and the durability, and gold fixtures and lighting tie it all together.

A kitchen remodel changes how a home looks and functions, but there's a real adjustment period before you get there. No stovetop, no usual sink, and daily routines like morning coffee and family dinners all shift for a while.
