How Foam Insulation Affects the Construction Process

Unlike the confusing rumors you may have heard, foam does not change your framing very much. You will save money during the building stage, if you make the decision to use foam before you frame. Listed below are the changes you may expect in a foam home:

You do not need the BIG additional expense of 2x6’s for your walls just to get a higher R-Value. Save the money & upgrade your insulation to foam.

Leave the corners of your walls with a bigger internal gap when framing. Then we can better seal and insulate the corners with foam.

Use a foam gasket between the bottom plate of your perimeter walls and your slab. This stops unwanted outdoor air infiltration from entering.

When foam insulating your attic floor, use sealed insulated recessed lights. These housings will not allow hot or cold moisture laden air from your attic, to enter your conditioned living areas. Improves overall comfort levels.

If you choose to foam insulate your roof deck (a closed attic system), you will need to eliminate all ridge vents and soffit vents. Your attic will then become part of the thermal envelope. It will be much cooler and cleaner.

When using a closed attic system, have the framers build attic separation walls at the garage, carport, front and back porches. Then we can properly seal your attic above all conditioned living areas.

Finally, a foam home does not need as much air conditioning or heating. The average foam home will use up to 30% smaller A/C units. One of our Energy Consultants will help you properly size your units.

Foam vs. Traditional Specifications

There is a reason why polyurethane foam is used in most every refrigerator, hot water heater, refreshment cooler, insulated flask, and hot tub. You don’t see fiberglass batts wrapped around the space shuttle either. That’s because polyurethane foam is far more superior in its functional R-value, structural strength, air/moisture sealing, and form fitting characteristics.

Consumers and architects are becoming more educated and more demanding relative the building materials used in the construction of their properties. They are seeking the best, highest performing, and sustainable materials for their properties, their families and their occupants, not to mention their wallets. And even though spray foam is more expensive, it can absolutely help to save money and create much greater value and performance over time.

That’s because spray foam is one of the best insulating materials known to man. When SPF is specified in construction, it often results in payback and savings on energy costs. SPF can often eliminate the need for other materials, labor intensive tasks, and possesses characteristics that competing materials just don’t have.

For example, residential insulation such as fiberglass has no where near the benefits of spray foam insulation. And while SPF may cost more up front, it pays for itself through energy savings, air quality improvements, air/moisture/mold management, noise reduction, and overall strength improvements. If you really look at these benefits, SPF is actually less expensive and far more valuable over time, and isn’t that what sustainable design and “green” building is all about?

Does Venting an Attic Remove Moisture?

Converting attics into a semi-conditioned space in hot climates by closing soffits, gable and ridge vents is a positive design approach in reducing the moisture loads in houses and buildings. This can be achieved by moving the insulation from the floor of the attic to the underside of the roof deck. The usage of a high quality and low air permeable spray foam insulation, sprayed to the underside of the roof decks and sealing all vents, is an excellent approach in air leakage control. This design prevents the moisture laden air from the outside to enter into the attic and subsequently into the houses and building. In the state of Florida this design approach has been conducted for more than a decade and thousands of residential and commercial constructions have used the conditioned attic without any energy penalty when compared to the vented attics with air distribution ducts.

Test Your Attic IQ

Q: Air movement through a vented attic reduces cooling load.

A: FALSE: In vented attics radiant heat from the roof deck increases the attic temperature substantially.

Q: Venting attics removes moisture.

A: FALSE: In hot humid climates the best way to prevent moisture condensation is to prevent moisture altogether by sealing the attic from outside temperatures.

Q: Closed attics are more cost-effective and energy-efficient than vented attics.

A: TRUE: Closed attics are really the smarter choice!
