β¦.. on Nov 10. Local community members would like to propose the idea of a new playground in the Aitkin park. This would come solely from grants and fundraisers, NO increase in taxes or anything of that sort!
We have been hearing requests from our children to update the playground, so we are the voice of our children! οΏΌWe know having a new playground would not only be a positive change for all of the children of the community, but it would also be an attraction for our park and local businesses as well as for people visiting and/or moving here from other townsοΏΌ.
οΏΌWe have many concerns:
- Some of the pieces of equipment are over 40 years old.
- It is not up to ADA code, so any children in wheelchairs or with other special needs cannot utilize most of it.
- There are many safety hazards (eg: slivered wood covering the entire merry-go-round and a huge rut/lack of sand under the merry-go-round. One of the children fell off of it one day and slipped up under the structure).οΏΌ
- There are broken partsοΏΌ/structures that no longer work (eg: horses, activity boards on main climbing structure)οΏΌ
- The current structure there is geared for children up to about age 7, but we have nothing for kids 8+ years old.οΏΌ
- Children who are homeschooled (about 10% of Aitkinβs population of kids) and children younger than preschool age have no decent playground. The elementary school has to restrict playground access for understandable safety reasons until after 5:30 PM daily, which is just another reason for a nice new city playground. π
We much appreciate you taking the survey, no matter your view on this. Your opinions matter. Thank you so much!οΏΌ
