Heartland Handcrafted

Heartland Handcrafted Heartland Handcrafted primarily offers handyman, remodeling and custom woodworking services. In addition, we provide custom apparel and leather patches.

We are registered contractors in the state of Iowa. Founded by husband and wife duo, Derek and Megan Garrett, Heartland Handcrafted began with a few tools in a small garage. At that time, items were made from necessity and for personal use. Now, from a slightly bigger shop, Derek provides custom woodworking, home renovation and handyman services. And Megan often takes their talents on the road, of

fering DIY home decor classes such as farmhouse signs and chunky blankets. Helping you create a space where you can relax and live your best life is our mission. From small decor items to whole home renovations, let Heartland Handcrafted tackle your project. Contact us to get your project started. We are licensed, insured and are accredited by the Better Business Bureau.

The first official client project in the new shop is underway! 🎉🥰🙌

We’ve been in the new house/shop 3 months now and both are still very much a construction zone but we’re making progress. Remodeling an entire house while also setting up a new shop for your business is no joke. But we’re enjoying almost every minute and can’t wait to be fully operational again.

Thanks to all our wonderful clients, friends and family for your support and patience during our transition.

We’ve been getting asked “are you still doing remodels” and “are you still doing apparel” a lot lately. We know. We’ve been a little social media MIA. But trust us, we are very much still doing all the things. And happy to talk about your project or tee shirt needs!

We’ve just also been very busy still tackling our own remodel (peep our shower floor!) - and making tees for our daughter’s team sports!

We may be operating a bit slower, and are still struggling to find all the tools after the move, but we’re here!! Call, text, email or message. And let’s chat!

A fellow small business is speaking truth today. Sure you can get apparel, hats and even wooden decor online. Sure it probably is cheaper. But do you know where it came from? Was it even made by a human? And does it have the same quality? And if there happens to be an issue or concern, can you catch someone from the online shop as you pass them at your local coffee shop or grocery store and ask them for a resolution?
I could keep going but I won’t.

I wanted to provide a little update on how life looks for a small business & brand in Iowa right now.

We had a customer this past week that purchased an item full price on our website. She then emailed & asked us to cancel her order because her $15 coupon code didn’t apply. She told us that she had put an item in her cart & was waiting (for months) to receive an abandoned cart coupon code before she made her purchase…

Guys. I do not share this to shame this person. I love a good sale as much as the next person. But shopping with a small business should not be looked at like how you shop on Amazon or at Target. Our operating and product costs are at an ALL TIME HIGH. We don’t aspire to be & never will be on an equal playing field as those “big guys”. We are real humans that live in your local community trying to make ends meet & provide quality products, employment and experiences.

We faced news this past week that our product costs once again are on the brink of another HUGE increase because of the lovely “t” word no one wants to talk about. I don’t want to talk about it. But it’s substantially impacting how we operate at Doe A Deer.

I don’t believe in doom & gloom. I believe in pivoting & figuring it out. I’m so thankful for my team who supports me in this & helps pull me out of the dirt on some of the lowest of days.

I love hearing the real life journeys of other business owners & other females, so that’s why I’m sharing this with you today ❤️

I will always be INCREDIBLY grateful for each and every kind word & purchase you send our way. 🌸 ✨
