Isn't This Wild? The U.S. Navy manages a 64,000-acre forest to keep one wooden ship afloat.⚓

The USS Constitution, better known as "Old Ironsides," was launched in 1797 and became a legend during the War of 1812, when sailors watched British cannonballs appear to bounce off its thick white oak hull. More than 225 years later, it remains the world's oldest commissioned naval warship still afloat and an enduring symbol of American history.

Keeping a ship like that seaworthy takes a very specific kind of wood. That is why the Navy maintains Constitution Grove in Indiana, where white oak trees are carefully grown and managed for future repairs.

These are not just any trees. The ship requires massive, exceptionally straight white oak logs, some 40 feet long and more than 40 inches in diameter. It can take well over a century for a tree to reach that size.

Selective harvesting ensures there will be white oak available for generations to come.

That's a remarkable commitment to preserving both American history and one of hardwood's greatest success stories.

You never know who you will bump into out in the woods. This little one was too scared to run away with the siblings that all scurried up a nearby tree.

ANNOUNCEMENT:

Yesterday, June 30, 2026, we sold our Adamsville mill site to RF Lumber Company LLC. Please know that we will continue our forestry operations and purchasing standing timber in western PA and northeast OH. We have close relationships with several other mills in Crawford and Mercer counties where the logs can be processed. We also can coordinate responsible portable sawmill operations to process the logs into lumber right in the woods.

We look forward to this next chapter in Salem Hardwood’s more than three-decade-old story. If you have mature standing timber, please give us a call at the same number we have had since the old 412 days (724-932-5200) or “LOG ON!” 🪵 to the same website domain that we have had since the late 1990s [ www.salemhardwood.com ]
We hope to hear from you.

🌳🪵Onward and forward! 🌳🪵

It’s KERF Day! When we take time to celebrate wasting less wood with every cut through our thin band head rig sawmill. Less sawdust and more fine hardwood lumber for our customers. 🪚🌎🍃🌳

Love that GUY! He really needs to come and get some of the best BBQ in the US.

Pretty awesome when you see a red convertible pull in and see this “Guy” walk in. Stopped in to talk to us about our award winning sauces and got a bite to eat as well!
