Most of us who grew up in the fifties remember a table that would shock our grandchildren today. Food was simple, familiar, and never a performance. Pasta was something you read about, not something you cooked. Curry was a last name, not a dinner plan. A takeaway meant you carried homework home, not a bag of food. Pizza lived in a geography book beside a leaning tower in Italy, not in our kitchens.
Snacks were plain and honest. Crisps or chips came with one decision only, salt or no salt. Rice showed up as a sweet pudding and nothing more. A raincoat had one purpose and it stayed in the closet until it rained. Brown bread was looked at sideways, often thought of as food for hard times. Oil belonged in the garage and fat belonged in the pan. Tea was made properly with leaves and a teapot, and nobody asked if it was green or herbal.
Sugar was treasured. Cubes of it felt like luxury. Fish was just fish. In many homes, fish sticks were still a novelty or unheard of. Eating raw fish would have raised eyebrows and whispers about poverty, not compliments about taste. Yogurt was a mystery to most of us. Healthy food meant anything that filled your stomach and did not make you sick. If someone skipped peeling potatoes, they were judged quietly and harshly.
Indian restaurants were something you might imagine existed somewhere far away. Cooking outdoors meant you were camping. Seaweed was something you stepped over at the beach, not something you ate. The word kebab meant nothing. Prunes were medicine, not a snack. Muesli could be found, but many thought it belonged in a barn, not on a breakfast table.
Water came straight from the tap. If someone had suggested bottling it and charging good money, we would have laughed until we cried. And through all of it, meals were meals. No phones buzzing. No elbows planted on the table. Just food, conversation, and the quiet understanding that what we had was enough.
