scullery (n.) — a room for cleaning and storing dishes, and for doing messy kitchen work.
The word is six hundred years old but the concept is back.
Call it a back kitchen, a prep kitchen, whatever you want. It holds extra storage and food prep areas: an extra sink, refrigerator, the pantry, small appliances, the platters that come out twice a year - while allowing the main kitchen to be all that it has become. It's the most-used room in the house and the most-looked-at. Nobody wants to host in it and clean in it at the same time.
It's one of the best square-footage decisions we make with clients right now.
