What It Actually Takes to Put an Elevator Inside a Finished Home

Most people picture a home elevator as a box that drops into a closet.

The reality is a lot closer to building a small structure inside a house that is already standing.

This recent Cape May project is a great example.

We installed a Savaria Vuelift Mini, a compact round panoramic elevator that travels through the floor instead of running in a traditional masonry shaft. This one serves three stops, with the lower landing tied into a clean approach off the garage so the homeowner can roll straight into the cab.

Before any elevator hardware shows up, our construction crew has to open up the floor system at each stop and reframe it. On this project, that meant doubling joists back to the center bearing wall, framing the hoistway enclosure in the garage, and building out the pit and ramp.

The through-floor openings have to be cut clean and stacked correctly so every landing lines up. If they do not, the cab will not travel properly.

Then comes electrical and trade coordination.

A dedicated circuit runs from the pit up to the control panel. On this job, the electrician also had to relocate a large run of existing wiring that was sitting directly in the path of the new shaft.

Framing, electrical, and elevator installation all have to be sequenced around each other. That coordination is where these projects are won or lost.

After rough framing and rough electrical are complete, both get inspected before anything is closed up.

Only after sign-off do the recessed ceilings, drywall, trim, flooring, and finish carpentry go in. The goal is for the finished space to look like it was always part of the home, not something added later.

The elevator itself is ordered to verified field measurements taken from the built opening, not just the plans.

Once the equipment arrives, the lift is set, the doors are hung, and the unit is commissioned to run in automatic. Final trim and punch list items close out the project.

This is the part of accessibility work that does not fit into one glamour shot.

The framing. The load paths. The trade sequencing. The inspections.

It is also exactly what separates an elevator that looks good on day one from one that runs reliably for years.

🏠 Savaria V-1504 Vertical Platform Lift Installation

This recent Savaria V-1504 wheelchair lift installation included an optional remote controller, giving the user added flexibility when operating the lift.

A key technical consideration on this project was flood exposure. On the Savaria V-1504, the controller and hydraulic pump are located at the base inside the lift tower. Because this home is in a flood-prone area, the lift placement was planned so those critical components would sit above the Base Flood Elevation (BFE).

This installation also included a flood sensor float switch. If flood water reaches a certain level, the switch is designed to prevent the cab from descending into the water. That helps reduce the risk of someone becoming trapped at the lower landing and helps protect the lift equipment from avoidable damage.

These details matter. A vertical platform lift is not just about the equipment itself. Site conditions, drainage, flood exposure, user safety, and long-term serviceability all need to be considered before the lift is installed.

🏠 When a Home Elevator Becomes Part of the Home

This Savaria Vuelift home elevator installation showcases what's possible when accessibility meets craftsmanship.

Our team didn't just install an elevator - they integrated it seamlessly with the existing railing system. Every post was custom-positioned, the rails reconnected, and the wood stained to match perfectly.

The result? An elevator that looks like it was always meant to be there.

This is what we mean when we say accessibility should never mean compromise.
