I wanted to take an opportunity to discuss primer. Why do we need to use it?

Ok, so this is one reason:

These walls were recently re-done, new sheetrock installed. As you can see, it had been re-textured before I got here. (I'm just painting it).

New sheetrock is like soil after a long drought. Let's say a light rain comes in after a drought. The soil is so dry that a light rain is not going to wet it. All that will happen is the soil will "drink" the rain, absorbing it but not really doing much.

Sheetrock will "drink" paint so that you'll end up putting layer after layer after layer on it. (A paint job is guaranteed 2 coats, likely with just small touch ups, especially with heavier texture like knockdown or the swirly type.

What primer does is seals the sheetrock, adding a solid foundation for paint to sit on. It prevents the drywall from "drinking". *Note: paint is NOT primer. No paint, no type. They are 2 different products.

I've painted wall paneling, and that like drywall "drinks". The surface type is the factor.

Another reason would be painting light to dark, or dark to light. Why, you ask?

Paint has colorants, that just like mixing 2 colors such as blue and yellow make green.

I once painted a Mocha brown color over a chocolate brown color without primer. Yes, rookie mistake. I was indeed a rookie then.

The resulting color ending up being a lavender. LAVENDER! ON BASEBOARDS! No thank you.

So, if your painter is telling you that primer is required, trust the process. You want the paint color to be true to itself, with proper coverage, and with that lovely refresh that a new coat of paint will do for any space.

And yes, a second coat of primer was applied after this video. Don't come for me.
