If you havenโ€™t tried out PON yet, let this be your reason to. 90% of my Alocasias live in self watering PON pots, and they are THRIVING! We will have some more kits available soon up on our Palmstreet,
this is a great way to buy everything you need to test if you like it without breaking your bank and stuffing your supply closet!

Do you keep Semi-Hydro plants? Whatโ€™s your take on them?

Because really why? Iโ€™d rather hold the highest standards than have none at all.

On Tuesday we talked about Alocasia care, today weโ€™re talking all things Pothos!

I am by no means an expert, but I do have a bit of experience and I have definitely been through my trials and errors of these plants, with that being said,
This is โœจPothos for Dummiesโœจ

The first thing I want to address because it literally drives me so crazy, is what actually makes a Pothos, a Pothos?
When I first started my collection I HAD to have a โ€œSilver Pothosโ€ because my best friend swore up and down that they existedโ€ฆ come to find out that thatโ€™s just kind of a pet name. What actually makes a Pothos a Pothos, is this word โ€œEpipremnumโ€
By definition an Epipremnum is a climbing, or trailing aroid vine that uses special aerial roots to attach themselves to the trunks of trees in their native tropical forests. They are commonly confused with their sister species โ€œScindapsusโ€ but the difference is an Epi has multiple ovules in the flower o***y, where a Scindapsus only has one.

With Pothos being a climbing plant, when theyre allowed to climb their leaves will slowly start to grow larger, this is thought to be because in their natural habitats, when they climb up the tree trunks they eventually meet more light, which helps them to produce more chlorophyll.

If you are going to keep her strictly trailing, I suggest cutting the ends of her vines just a node or so once every 6 months and repotting them up at the top once their ready, they tend to lose those first leaves on the vines. Use a chunky soil mix, my babies LOVE the Craft Houseplant Mix from Grow Queen
We also exclusively feed with their organic fertilizers when they are dry at root level, and everyone lives in Bright spaces!

There are so many different varieties of these plants, and more coming out every year thanks to incredible cultivators working to create new colors, shapes, and vibes. they are a staple in any plant lovers collection, and such a low maintenance plant in contrast to my last post.

How many types of Pothos do you have? Do you let yours trail or climb?? Tell me about it in the comments!๐Ÿ’š๐Ÿ‘‡๐Ÿป

So you love Alocasias? But are you ready for one?

One thing I always tell people before they purchase a plant, specifically an Alocasia, is to do your research and examine your space beforehand. These plants are a learning experience, anyone who tells you theyโ€™ve never killed one is full of s**t.

Most Alocasias (commonly found varieties) will mature to be better 2 and 4 feet both tall and wide. They need a good space to sit with plenty of light and airflow, which brings us to our next point-

Unless you have a sunroom or a skylight chances are your natural light inside your home isnโ€™t going to be enough. Invest in a good overhead grow light, or if you have a good place under an existing fixture, you can buy a grow BULB.
We recommend SANSI LED LIGHTING INC.

My preferred method for keeping smaller Alocasias is in a Semi-Hydro substrate, I have some in PON and some in LECA. Both require more care and attention but are much more efficient for their root systems.
As for Alocasias in soil, Grow Queen makes the BEST aroid soil around, you can use our code โ€œGRAF15โ€ at checkout ;)
If you arenโ€™t in the market for a premium pre-made mix, try our under $20 at home mix, iโ€™ll be making another tutorial on that here soon. Keep your babies potted snug, I pot mine 1-2โ€ bigger than the root ball. Only water when your soil is 90% dry, or just below root level. Feed them every watering, even in the winter.

Remember that even if the plant dies, youโ€™re not a failure, that plant didnโ€™t have what it takes to survive in this fast paced environment. Try again, donโ€™t be afraid to ask questions!! And most importantly donโ€™t give up, because I too once thought I couldnโ€™t keep one alive๐Ÿ’šโœจ

My lives solely in Grow Queen aroid soil mix and fed only their plant food. This is your sign that you donโ€™t necessarily need Kokodama for your Anthuriums!
