We’ve launched The Concrete Corner, a monthly technical note by Eco Concrete Ltd focused on practical, Uganda-relevant concrete performance and durability.

Issue 001 (January 2026) is out: Durability Design of Concrete in Aggressive Urban Runoff Environments with a Kampala drainage case focus and a clear durability checklist.

February Theme (adopted):
Waterproofing and Rising Damp in Uganda: Why Buildings Rot from the Bottom Up.

We’re inviting:
• Guest writers (engineers, architects, QS, contractors, researchers)
• Product profiles (credible DPC/DPM systems, membranes, coatings, admixtures, drainage detailing solutions)
• Case notes (before/after repairs with photos and lessons)

Also, send your feedback on Issue 001. We will publish selected feedback in the February issue (with your name/organisation unless you prefer anonymous).

Follow/Subscribe to the page so you don’t miss the February issue and future editions.
If you want to contribute, comment “CONTRIBUTE” and we’ll reach out.

Segmental retaining walls are gravity-based structures made of interlocking precast concrete units that resist lateral soil pressure. Each of our unit’s weight and friction keep the wall stable, while the hollow design allows for flexibility and drainage. Geogrid reinforcement can be added to enhance performance for tall walls, loose soils and heavy loads. Perfect for sloped terrains! Visit TofaliAfrica.com for a free quote.🌍🏗️

About stones in construction:
****************************
Your granite and andesite aggregates (crushed stones for use in concrete works) might be the hardest for your concrete. They aren’t necessarily the best choice for all concrete applications. Especially that strong structures must be durable too. Apparently, when constructing closed sewer lines and other closed wastewater drainage systems, it is safer to use limestone or dolomite aggregates. This is because most domestic wastewater contains sulphates (chemical compounds made of atoms of oxygen and sulfur) which further manifest as hydrogen sulphide.

You still remember from your “Primary Two” chemistry class that sulphates can give you sulphuric acid? Don’t worry. You’re not alone. My text editor, too, didn’t know the word, sulphuric.

But, getting back to the story that favors limestone and dolomite rocks as sources of aggregates for concrete in aggressive closed sewer environments, the problem is that this sulphuric acid tends to increase in concentration and eat up cement in concrete. Now, hardened cement has two major parts, the lightly acidic strength giving part and the strongly alkaline lime dominated part that does not significantly provide strength to the mix but maintains physical stability and structural legitimacy. It is this lime that keeps the PH of hardened cement at 12.5 (strong alkaline). We all have soldiers keeping peace in our countries. The acid would normally eat up this lime in the hardened cement causing disintegration of the strength giving structure in the hardened cement system. Of course, the concrete will disintegrate once the material that has been binding its aggregate (stones and sand), the hardened cement, disintegrates. Who would remain standing after their support structure is dismantled? Who would stay in a country that is not guarded well by its legitimate army?

Apparently, the same chemical compound, lime, dominates the composition of limestone and dolomite rocks. So, when their aggregates are used in domestic wastewater infrastructure, its like giving a greedy man too much food. Especially that aggregate in concrete can be 60 to 80 percent in volume composition. So, the acid is overwhelmed and neutralized by the abundance of the compounds in the rocks leaving the hardened cement to focus on its aggregate binding function. That’s how the structures will end up being durable.

Meanwhile, you don’t have to suffer with decisions about construction materials for your projects. We can do all the thinking about material choices for you and supply you with the right quality and quantity of materials. Just visit https://tofaliafrica.com/ to let us know your requirements.
