Oil & Gas fires fall under Class B of the classes of fire.
Oil & Gas burn intensely due to the high energy content of hydrocarbons, with the best way of extinguishing such fires in an oil or gas well, being starvation.
On the fire triangle you need about 3 components to cause fire that are ignition material (food), Oxygen (basically any exposure to air) and source of ignition.
In a gas/oil well, starvation is performed in a method known as Well Capping, which seals the wellhead to stop the flow of oil, gas, or other fluids from the well. Done by a capping assembly over the wellhead to physically block the flow.
In this industry, safety comes first.
