A mating nuc (short for "mating nucleus") is a miniaturized beehive designed for one specific purpose: providing a home for a virgin queen to live in while she goes on her mating flights and begins her first few days of egg-laying.
​Unlike a standard 5-frame nuc used to start a new colony, a mating nuc is often much smaller (sometimes called a "mini-nuc") to save on resources.
​Why use a Mating Nuc?
​Resource Efficiency: It only requires a cup or two of bees and a tiny amount of honey/pollen. This allows you to raise many queens without "gutting" your main production hives for workers.
​Safety: It gives the virgin queen a "home base" where she can orient herself. Without a colony to return to, a queen wouldn't survive her mating flights.
​Evaluation: It allows the beekeeper to verify the queen is "mated and laying" (checking her brood pattern) before risking an introduction into a full-sized, valuable colony.
