Did You Know About Post-Tensioned Combined Footings?

In 2022, Mario Kleff and Dr. Songkiat Matupayont developed a post-tensioned combined footing (PT combined footing) system for a residential building in Thailand. The foundation configuration consists of two post-tensioned concrete combined footings, with each footing supporting two building columns and their associated post-tensioned long-span structural system.

The PT combined footings are supported by drilled deep piles. Each footing distributes the loads from its two column load points through the post-tensioned concrete footing and into its respective pile group, transferring the structural reactions into the deeper supporting strata.

Above the two PT combined footings, a long-span post-tensioned ground-floor slab is constructed together with columns supporting long-span post-tensioned concrete girders. The two PT combined footings therefore form the foundation elements of an integrated post-tensioned structural system, supporting multiple column load points while transferring the resulting reactions to the deep-pile foundations.

Did you know that the use of cellular beams in Thailand was being developed as early as 2007–2008?

The story goes back to the end of 2007 and the beginning of 2008, when conceptual ideas emerged for integrating cellular beams into residential projects in Pattaya.

Two early projects were developed: Club Royal, a cluster condominium project, and W-Tower (Wongamat Tower), a high-rise building. Both projects received EIA approval and construction permits, although neither was ultimately built with the proposed cellular beam structural system.

Club Royal was first on the drawing board; W-Tower was intended to proceed first. On 30 June 2008, the architectural agreement was signed, and the design work began. The concept incorporated cellular beams and cellular beam columns into the structural system, together with a 13-meter-high lobby, a large seawater aquarium, and a glass elevator passing vertically through the structure.

The W-Tower design was subsequently submitted for EIA approval and received a construction permit.

The Club Royal concept continued shortly after the W-Tower architectural agreement. Its first submitted design incorporated long-span cellular beam structural members, with advice from Somsak Khumplew.

Meanwhile, in 2008, Mario Kleff designed Park Royal 2, integrating a steel frame, cellular beams, and long-span post-tensioned concrete decking. The structure was completed in 2010 and finished in 2011.

These projects document an early period in which cellular beam technology was being explored and incorporated into building design in Thailand, before it became more familiar in the local construction industry.

History and Documentation of Cellular Beams in Thailand
International Origin and Technology

Cellular-beam technology is not a Thai invention. The modern cellular-beam manufacturing process associated with Westok traces to a UK patent application with a priority date of 12 January 1988, originally filed by Wescol Structures Ltd. and naming Peter Allan Walker as inventor.

ASD/Westok subsequently developed Cellbeam software for the analysis and design of cellular beams. The software was developed for structural design procedures, including British Standards and, subsequently, Eurocodes.

Cellular Beams in Thailand—2008
Early design concepts were developed by Mario Kleff in late 2007.

The documented development of cellular-beam applications in Pattaya dates to 2008.

In that year, Wandeegroup and Mario Kleff obtained access to Cellbeam software for the development and structural analysis of cellular-beam applications in Thailand. The work involved the integration of cellular steel beams with conventional and post-tensioned concrete structural systems.

Project documentation identifies Mario Kleff, structural engineer Songkiat Matupayont, Somsak Khumplew, and Prapat Boonlualoah in connection with the development, together with participating companies including Siam Yamato Steel (SYS), B.S.Y. Construction, and PBL Group.

The objective was to apply cellular steel beams to long-span structural systems while maintaining the required structural capacity and providing greater flexibility for architectural planning and building services.

Park Royal 2 was the first building in Thailand identified in the project record as utilizing a structural system combining steel frames, cellular beams, and prestressed concrete slabs.

Structural Verification — December 2008

Chagapon Tipsuwan, of Stream Rice Co., Ltd., was involved in calculations examining the feasibility of using cellular beams in conjunction with a concrete deck in December 2008.

The resulting beam design was not sufficient for the applied loading. The structural calculation report identifies deficiencies associated with longitudinal shear and web-post buckling.

https://wandeegroup.com/pdf/cellular_beam_value.pdf

Songkiat Matupayont, together with Mario Kleff, subsequently provided the structural solution that addressed these deficiencies and made the beam design workable.

This distinction is important: the calculation of a proposed beam and the successful structural solution are separate stages of the engineering process.

Fabrication and the 2009 Park Royal 2 Construction

The available project record distinguishes the structural engineering work from the later question of fabrication.

Park Royal 2 in Pattaya was designed in 2008 and constructed between 2009 and 2010, with interior completion in 2011. The project incorporated cellular steel beams within an integrated long-span structural system.

Contemporary documentation of the project was published by Der Farang and Real Estate Magazine Thailand (REm).

These records establish that cellular-beam construction was taking place in Thailand by 2009, predating the later development of dedicated cellular-beam design software and fabrication services by other Thai steel companies.

Cellular Beam Engineering Research in Thailand — 2012

By 2012, cellular beams were also the subject of dedicated structural-engineering research in Thailand.

At the 10th International PSU Engineering Conference, held on 14–15 May 2012, Pattamad Panedpojaman presented “Buckling analysis for web post of cellular beams.” The paper examined cellular-beam geometry and structural behavior, including opening diameter and spacing, web-post flexure, and web-post buckling.

The paper describes the cellular-beam manufacturing process as cutting a rolled steel section in a half-circular pattern and re-welding the two parts, producing the characteristic deeper section with regularly spaced circular openings. It also identifies web-post behavior as a critical component of cellular-beam design.

This provides independent evidence that cellular-beam structural engineering was being formally studied and presented in Thailand by 2012.

The research continued into the following years. In 2013, Pattamad Panedpojaman and Thaksin Thepchatri published “Finite Element Investigation on Deflection of Cellular Beams with Various Configurations” in the International Journal of Steel Structures, Vol. 13, No. 3, pp. 487–494. The manuscript had been submitted in January 2012, indicating that the research was already underway at that time.

https://www.researchgate.net/publication/271662319_Finite_element_investigation_on_deflection_of_cellular_beams_with_various_configurations

In 2014, Pattamad Panedpojaman, Thaksin Thepchatri, and Suchart Limkatanyu published “Novel design equations for shear strength of local web-post buckling in cellular beams” in Thin-Walled Structures, Vol. 76, pp. 92–104.
https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/abs/pii/S0263823113002929

These publications establish a documented Thai research trajectory in cellular-beam structural behavior from at least 2012 onward, including deflection, web-post buckling, and shear strength.

Vibhavadi Hospital Claim

The Vibhavadi Hospital project, dated approximately 2010, was presented on the Stream Rice website in 2010 as a project involving Cellular Beam (Thailand).
Source: https://web.archive.org/web/20100728232543/http://www.streamrice.com/beam.php

In 2012, Chagapon Tipsuwan stated that cellular beams were first used in Thailand on the Vibhavadi Hospital parking lot project.

That statement conflicts with the earlier documented chronology.

Construction of Park Royal 2 in Pattaya had already incorporated cellular beams during 2009–2010, as documented by contemporary project material. Consequently, the 2012 statement that Vibhavadi Hospital represented the first use of cellular beams in Thailand is inconsistent with the available earlier documentation.

The contemporary Park Royal 2 documentation therefore predates the Vibhavadi Hospital claim.

Siam Yamato Steel—Later Development

Siam Yamato Steel (SYS) represents a later stage in the development of cellular-beam capability in Thailand.

In the mid-2010s, SYS developed its own cellular-beam design software and calculation methodology. This demonstrates the development of a dedicated engineering capability for cellular-beam design.

By the end of the 2010s, SYS had expanded this capability into cellular-beam fabrication, with documented factory cutting and welding services.

This chronology is significant. SYS's later development of dedicated cellular-beam design and fabrication capability should not be confused with the earlier introduction, engineering development, and documented construction of cellular beams in Thailand beginning in 2008–2009.

Historical Milestone of Cellular Beam in Thailand

In 2008, Wandeegroup, together with Mario Kleff, developed the design for the first documented building in Thailand combining a steel-frame structure, cellular beams, and post-tensioned concrete: Park Royal 2 in Pattaya.

In 2009, Siam Yamato Steel (SYS) manufactured the first documented custom 900 mm-deep H-section members in Thailand for Park Royal 2.

Archived evidence for the project, including historical documentation and photographs, is available here:

https://wandeegroup.com/cellular-beam

In 2007–2009, Wandeegroup Thailand, with lead designer Mario Kleff, developed cellular beam applications for several projects in Thailand. The design concept for Club Royal incorporated a cellular beam composite system to achieve long structural spans. In 2008, Wandeegroup also developed the cellular beam design for W-Tower (Wongamat Tower). During the same period, Wandeegroup developed the cellular beam design for Park Royal 2, which subsequently proceeded to physical fabrication and construction in 2009. These projects provide documented evidence of the development and application of cellular beam technology in Thailand during 2007–2009.

In early 2008, Wandeegroup’s research concluded that the fabrication of cellular beams was not yet established in Thailand. Mario Kleff subsequently contacted Westok UK to discuss the possibility of importing cellular beams. For cost reasons, however, Westok instead supplied Wandeegroup with Cellbeam software and relevant technical information to facilitate the fabrication of cellular beams in Thailand. The developer, Heights Holdings Co., Ltd., subsequently decided not to proceed with the cellular beam designs for Club Royal and W-Tower (Wongamat Tower).

Later in 2008, Wandeegroup contacted Stream Rice Co., Ltd. and supplied the information and Cellbeam software received from Westok to investigate the use of cellular beams with a concrete deck for Park Royal 2. The structural calculation indicated that the proposed cellular beam was insufficient for the applied loads. Mario Kleff subsequently consulted Thai engineer and professor Somsak Khumplew regarding the structural solution.

Chagapon Tipsuwan of Stream Rice then approached Nittaya Wongsin of Wandeegroup seeking financial support to establish a machine for cutting steel beams for cellular beam production. Wongsin declined the request and subsequently contacted Somchai Jittawisutthiwong of B.S.Y. Construction instead.

By 2009, Stream Rice Co., Ltd. had established a website presenting detailed information on cellular beam technology. The website, however, reproduced technical text, images, and drawings originating from Westok UK while displaying the copyright notice “© Copyright 2008 all right reserved Stremrice Co.,Ltd.” The website identified both Stream Rice Co., Ltd. and Cellular Beam (Thailand) Co., Ltd. Cellular Beam (Thailand) Co., Ltd., however, was officially registered on 6 March 2009.

The earliest documented project reference identified for Stream Rice Co., Ltd. or Cellular Beam (Thailand) is the parking lot at Vibhavadi Hospital, 51/3 Ngamwongwan Road, Chatuchak, Bangkok.

Archived evidence of the website is available here:

https://web.archive.org/web/20100728232543/http://www.streamrice.com/beam.php

In 2009, construction of Park Royal 2 commenced based on the cellular beam design developed in 2008. Songkiat Matupayont became the adviser on the project, while PBL Group carried out the post-tensioning work. Siam Yamato Steel and B.S.Y. functioned as fabricators. The physical fabrication and construction of the cellular beam structure therefore date to 2009, while photographs made at a later date document the already-constructed structure.

Park Royal 2 therefore represents an important historical milestone in Thai construction and is the earliest documented cellular beam project with a steel frame identified in the available historical record, with physical fabrication and construction documented from 2009.

Historical confirmation

The historical record is independently reinforced by contemporary sources from the period. In its October 2009 issue, Real Estate Magazine Thailand (REm) described Park Royal 2 as “First with cellular beams” and stated that “for the first time in Thailand cellular beams will be used in a condominium construction.” The article also reported that construction work on Park Royal 2 had already begun.

https://web.archive.org/web/20100415180909/http://www.realestatemagazinethailand.com/2009_October/parkyoya.html

This contemporary reporting is subsequently corroborated by an official letter dated 10 September 2010 from Pichet Uthaiwattananonta, Director of the Construction Department, Pattaya City Hall. The letter recognizes Mario Kleff's work in the introduction of innovative architectural solutions, specifically including the use of cellular-beam design in residential projects, and states unequivocally that “Park Royal II was the first to be built.” The document is an official Thai-language letter with a certified English translation.

Cellbeam and Cellular Beam Design in Thailand

Documentary records establish the use of Cellbeam in connection with Mario Kleff's work on the Club Royal condominium project in Pattaya in 2008, including the consideration of cellular beams in combination with concrete and vibration behavior using a simplified analysis approach associated with SCI P354.

The Cellbeam software and accompanying calculation documentation received by Wandeegroup from Westok form part of the documentary record of cellular-beam design and calculation in Thailand during this period. Wandeegroup subsequently provided the software and calculation documentation to the Construction Department of Pattaya City Hall and a further set to Chagapon Tipsuwan of Stream Rice Co., Ltd., for calculations and assessment of the potential use of cellular beams in combination with concrete.

Somsak Khumplew supported Kleff's proposal to utilize a long-span cellular beam.

The cellular-beam work documented at Club Royal was followed by further development and application of the technology in Thailand through the Park Royal 2 project.

Park Royal 2 is the earliest documented multistory residential building identified in this record to combine a steel frame, cellular beams, and post-tensioned concrete.

Club Royal, in its original proposed form, was never built.

STRUCTURAL EXPRESSION IS MARIO KLEFF’S ARCHITECTURAL STYLE

Mario Kleff does not apply structure to architecture. He makes architecture out of structure.

The load path, the span, the mass, the material, and the foundation are not technical considerations added to the design—they are the design itself.

His signature residences are characterized by massive concrete and steel members, heavily reinforced high-performance concrete, exceptional spans, and deep foundations engineered to carry them.
