While Europe and the US are using Chinese models on a large scale, China’s AI market remains largely self-contained. In China and Hong Kong, approximately 95 percent of observed token consumption is accounted for by Chinese models, while US models accounted for only around 5 percent. ChatGPT and Claude are also not available in China.

Bridging Democracies: Inspire. Influence. Impact.

From 16 to 21 September 2026, seven members of CALD Youth visited Düsseldorf and Berlin at the invitation of Junge Liberale (JuLis). The mission aimed to strengthen cooperation between the two organisations and create opportunities for lasting exchange among young liberal leaders, policymakers and research institutions.

During the programme, participants observed a parliamentary session in Düsseldorf, learned how the FDP and JuLis support the development of young liberal leaders, and exchanged perspectives and practices from across Asia and Germany. They also explored new ways to deepen cooperation and strengthen the CALD Youth–JuLis network. In Berlin, members of the CALD Youth Executive joined the FDP’s election-night reception as well.

By bringing together democratic experiences from Germany and Asia, the mission helped lay the groundwork for future collaboration and a stronger international liberal network.

The Friedrich Naumann Foundation for Freedom is proud to support this exchange between young leaders in Asia and Germany. More updates on this growing cooperation are coming soon. Stay tuned!

Almost every free app constantly sends data to the advertising ecosystem in the background: the device’s location, a unique advertising ID, interests, contacts. Data brokers buy up these streams, merge them and use them to create profiles: where someone lives and works, who they meet and which bar they go to. The data is considered anonymous. Yet anyone familiar with the patterns can quickly identify an individual from it.

So what can be done? The authors are not calling for a ban on these services purchasing data. They are calling for what is taken for granted in the case of any other surveillance measure: a legal basis with clearly defined purposes and a requirement to state reasons; an independent body to approve sensitive purchases in advance; and a supervisory authority that can also scrutinise the use of the data.

2026 has become a turning point in how governments worldwide treat young people's access to social media. Australia entered the year with its under-16 restrictions already in force—the world’s first nationwide ban of its kind. Indonesia followed with restrictions on under-16 access to so-called “high-risk” digital platforms, becoming the first Southeast Asian nation to do so, while the United Kingdom announced an Australian-style under-16 ban expected to take effect in 2027.

However, children shielded from social media today will still meet algorithms, AI, and digital manipulation as adults. A ban merely delays the encounter and makes it more dangerous.

Read why age restrictions alone are not enough and how we can help children and their parents and guardians build safe social media skills. Link in the comment below.

AI progress may not stop at human-level capabilities. Some forecasts warn that, if advanced AI systems begin automating AI research, development could accelerate dramatically, bringing both major opportunities and serious risks. Understanding what AI can and cannot do is essential to shaping effective policy: addressing real risks without undermining digital innovation.

This week, the Naumann Academy of Politics launched its week-long workshop, “The Big Wave: Innovation Policy in the Age of AI and Beyond,” in Bang Saen, Thailand. Policymakers and AI experts from around the world are exploring AI capabilities, comparing policy approaches, and discussing reforms to prepare for the future of innovation.

The workshop is taking place amid flooding and other disaster-related challenges in Thailand. We are thinking of everyone affected.

Follow our page for updates and insights from participants throughout the week.
