'Cambodian Wooden Houses and Preservation'
By: Hok Sokol
The Khmer once had an old, prosperous civilisation, which was the result of their ancestors' imaginative endeavours, which are reflected in many famed architectural works.
Temples which have survived are evidence of the glorious past of the Khmer nation. Apart from large temples, which were devoted to different religions, equal attention was paid to the art of designing private dwellings and these can also be considered of equal importance. Both types of building (monumental and residential) are related and interact with each other, thereby constituting a village, a city and its society.
Since ancient times, building in wood represents a significant part of Khmer cultural heritage. Khmer traditional houses are majestically elaborate in style and design.
This national patrimony has gradually decreased in number due to civil unrest, due to the changes in people's thinking, which may eventually lead to the partial oblivion of Khmer civilization from negligence in protection and conservation.
Today's villagers offer a contrast to those in the early 20th century. Houses were objects of social distinction, a custom dating back to ancient times. House structures and elements reveal a great diversity that may soon no longer exist in cities, but which still can be seen in extant buildings in the provinces. Most, however, are in desperate condition, and will vanish in the near future unless measures are taken to maintain them.
To prevent this disaster, I am continuing to research and study this subject by collecting and recording examples of old Khmer construction in the provinces to preserve this architectural heritage.
From 2000 to 2022, with research by many deference programs of Darryl Collins and my own work, we made the book title: Cambodian Wooden Houses in 2022 in English version and now we have 2nd edition of the English version translate into French and Khmer which were released in this December 2023.
These results I will demonstrate in the presentation of my topic: 'Cambodian Wooden Houses and Preservation'.
