| Landscape as a Vision for the Future
Exploring new possibilities for better living in a changing world
The future of our cities is shaped by changes that are already happening. Climate change, shifting social conditions, new ways of living, and evolving urban challenges are reshaping how we experience and inhabit our cities.
At Shma, we explore the future through different forms of practice. From design competitions and initiative projects to experimental projects and public campaigns, we use design as a way to question existing conditions, test new possibilities, and imagine how cities can evolve.
These projects look beyond immediate solutions to explore how landscape architecture can contribute to better living in the long term. They address challenges such as climate change, biodiversity loss, changing demographics, public health, and shifting patterns of urban life, while exploring new relationships between people, nature, and the city.
Rather than predicting a single future, these projects open up multiple possibilities. They ask how our cities can become more resilient, adaptable, inclusive, and sustainable, and how design can help shape environments where people and nature can thrive together.
This curated selection brings together Shma's explorations beyond conventional project boundaries, reflecting our ongoing vision for better cities, better living, and a more resilient future.

| Shma Joins AHEAD Asia 2026 in Singapore to Celebrate 10 Years of Hospitality and Design Excellence
On 11 September, Prapan Napawongdee and Yossapon Boonsom, Founding Directors of Shma, joined the AHEAD Asia 2026 celebration at Pan Pacific Orchard in Singapore, marking the 10th anniversary of the AHEAD Awards and bringing together inspiring voices from across the hospitality and design industry.
The evening was also an opportunity to celebrate The Ritz-Carlton, Bangkok, which was named a finalist in the Landscaping & Outdoor Spaces category.
Located beside Lumphini Park, the project was envisioned as an urban sanctuary where landscape becomes an integral part of the hospitality experience. Through layered gardens, immersive planting, sculpted landforms, water, shade, and carefully framed views, the design creates a seamless transition between the energy of the city and the calm of nature.
It was a pleasure to be part of the celebration and to connect with inspiring designers, collaborators, and industry leaders from across Asia.
Our sincere thanks to our clients, collaborators, and project teams for the trust, vision, and dedication behind The Ritz-Carlton, Bangkok.

| 80th Birthday Anniversary Park of His Majesty the King (Sathorn): An Inclusive Healing Landscape Where Reconnection Becomes Belonging.
Once a mostly hardscaped and disconnected neighborhood park, The 80th Birthday Anniversary Park in Sathorn has been transformed into a welcoming landscape that reconnects people, community, and nature. New pathways, open lawns, sensory gardens, accessible spaces, and expanded planting invite people of all ages and abilities to move, pause, and enjoy everyday life in the heart of Bangkok.
By doubling its green space from 20% to 40%, the park now offers more shade, biodiversity, cooling, and opportunities for stormwater infiltration. A small neighborhood park becomes more than just a green space. It becomes a living part of the city’s infrastructure, supporting a healthier, more connected, and resilient Bangkok.

| Cloud 11: A Creator Hub Where Landscape Creates Room for New Green Possibilities in the City
Cloud 11 is Thailand’s first Creator Hub, a large-scale development in Bangkok designed around Work, Live, and Play. With facilities supporting work, living, and creativity, the project is envisioned as a place where people can spend an entire day. It also offers an opportunity to rethink what green and open spaces can do within a dense urban environment.
Shma developed the landscape from Snøhetta’s initial concept, integrating landscape across both the interior and exterior of the building. Rising above the city, the building became an opportunity to turn its verticality into an active experience. A continuous trail-running route connects the lower levels to the top before looping back down. Developed with Snøhetta, the distinctive yellow route serves as both a path for movement and a defining element of the project, with one complete loop spanning approximately 1.2 kilometres.
The landscape also creates connections with the surrounding city. Along the approximately 200-metre stretch of Bang Aor Canal, the open space becomes a linear park and pedestrian route linking Sukhumvit Road to Soi 66/1. The existing banyan tree is retained, while seating, lawns, interactive spaces, fountains, and urban furniture support different forms of use. Higher up, a large multi-purpose lawn and built-in seating create another shared urban space, bringing architecture, landscape, and everyday life together.
Ecology forms another layer of the landscape strategy. Inspired by the ecosystem of Bang Krachao, diverse planting creates habitat for small urban wildlife rather than simply adding greenery. As part of a wider green network connecting Bang Krachao, Nong Bon Lake Sports Center Public Park, and Suan Luang Rama IX, Cloud 11 can also act as a stepping stone for birds and other species moving through the city. The landscape therefore works for both people and other forms of urban life.
This approach expands the idea of where green space can exist in the city. It can move along building edges, ramps, rooftops, paths, and lawns, creating new relationships between nature and everyday life. At Cloud 11, colour, planting, movement, public space, and ecology come together to create room for New Green Possibilities.

Shma Singapore: Opening a New Chapter in Asia
Bringing Thai Creativity and Global Standards to Create Places of Life for Asia and Beyond.
Shma is a Thai landscape design practice creating Places of Life where people and nature thrive, and where the built environment contributes to a more sustainable future.
Today, we are excited to announce the opening of Shma Singapore, bringing more than 19 years of experience in landscape design, research, and sustainability to a new chapter in Singapore. Our journey in the city began more than a decade ago, with projects including Mapletree Business City II, Mondrian Singapore Duxton, and Pasir Ris 8, with more projects taking shape in Singapore in the near future.
Our work brings together a distinctive Thai creative perspective, global design standards, and a deep understanding of local context. Through a research-driven approach, we explore people, behaviour, ecology, climate, and urban conditions to create landscapes that are meaningful, resilient, and sustainable, while supporting better everyday experiences.
From residential and hospitality to workplaces and public spaces, we look forward to working with clients, developers, architects, and partners to create Places of Life where people and nature can thrive. We aim to contribute to Singapore’s vision of a City in Nature and to a more sustainable future for the wider Asian region.
As we open this new chapter, we thank every client, partner, collaborator, and friend who has shaped Shma’s journey over the past two decades. We look forward to bringing our experience forward, continuing to learn and evolve, and creating Places of Life together for the decades to come.

| Hand, Head, Heart: Reimagining Design Processes Through Shma’s Lens
In an era of rapid urban growth and increasingly complex challenges, traditional approaches to landscape architecture can often prioritise aesthetics over meaning. Top-down urban development can result in public spaces that lack life, while artificial ecosystems may fail to respond to the dynamics of nature and adapt over time.
Today, designers face an additional challenge as artificial intelligence (AI) reshapes the design industry. While AI can enhance efficiency and outcomes, it also raises questions around reliability, originality, and the meaning of place, values that have long been at the heart of landscape architecture.
So, what defines the value of landscape architecture in the future? At Shma, we believe design must go beyond meeting market and client demands. It must create measurable value, respond to environmental challenges, build social trust, and remain relevant to the people and ecosystems it serves.
Our approach, ‘Lens as Guidance,’ brings together knowledge across disciplines, data, technology, and an understanding of both people and ecosystems. It is guided by four principles: Creativity, to imagine new possibilities; Measurability, to create tangible outcomes; Empathy, to understand people and their experiences; and Inclusivity, to involve diverse stakeholders in shaping places together.
Together, these principles shape Hand, Head, Heart: what we make, what we know, and what we care about. They guide us towards landscape architecture that is meaningful, adaptable, and built to last.
For the past 19 years, Shma has explored how places can become meaningful parts of everyday urban life. How can landscape architecture transform challenged spaces into places for life? Through our projects and research, we continue to demonstrate how landscape architecture can create places that connect people, nature, and the city, fostering healthier, more inclusive, and more resilient urban environments for the future.

| The Process of Possibility
How ideas evolve through participation.
An idea changes when it meets the people, conditions, and questions around it. Through participation, ideas are brought into conversation with the people and contexts they are designed for.
What begins as one possibility can open into another. Different perspectives challenge assumptions, unexpected needs come to light, and new directions emerge along the way.
Participation is therefore more than a way of working. It opens up what design can become. By learning, testing, and adapting together, each project can respond to its context, evolve with changing needs, and move towards solutions that can endure over time.

Placemaking Workshop:
How Can We Transform a Space into a Place?
(One Bangkok)
Sense of One Bangkok: Define what matters. Observe. Place Quality Matrix
Observe One Bangkok: Explore the site through the Place Quality Matrix
Co-Create the Future: Turn observations into ideas

Placemaking Talk:
‘How Placemaking Turns Everyday Experiences into Long-term Value’
