The Aur Aree house is a multi-generational home where an extended family and their relatives can live and gather. The family members, both young and old, wished to move out of their small, previous residence, and the challenge was to create a design that emphasized communal spaces for family activities and connected the inhabitants.
The house is situated in a suburban area in Bangkok, opposite the old house connected by the street and surrounded by two-story detached homes. The challenge was to provide privacy for the family while maintaining a connection between the old and new house. From the exterior, the house has a dualistic composition of solid and translucent boxes that cater to the direction of the sun, context, and functions. A perforated metal sheet of translucent material is utilized as a double skin to provide privacy and reduce thermal energy from the south and east at the front. A large tree was planted in the courtyard to provide shading for the roof terraces and rooms. To maintain a relationship between the old and new houses, the new house terrace is positioned to face the old house terrace, utilized for family outdoor activities. At the back, a white painted solid wall is utilized to block the sunlight from the south for the bedroom that has a large opening facing the courtyard.
The semi-outdoor entrance creates a sense of hospitality, enclosed by the central courtyard, which allows natural ventilation and light to flow indoors. The small tropical garden on the side enhances this effect. The living space has been positioned behind the central courtyard to allow the elder and young members to see each other when they come and go. The elders typically occupy the living space. The living, dining, and working areas have been combined into a single space to promote a connection between family members. However, each family member has their requirements for their bedroom. The interior designs of each room reflect the mood and tone that the individual prefers, personalized through the use of different colors and textures of materials.
