โครงการนี้เป็นการออกแบบในลักษณะการสร้างอาคารใหม่เชื่อมต่อกับโครงสร้างอาคารเดิมที่มีอยู่ เนื่องจากในพื้นที่เดิมมีอาคารอยู่แล้ว ประกอบกับเกาะเต่าเป็นเกาะขนาดเล็ก การทุบทำลายอาคารเดิมเพื่อสร้างใหม่ทั้งหมดจะทำให้เกิดขยะจากการก่อสร้างจำนวนมาก เพื่อลดผลกระทบต่อสิ่งแวดล้อม แนวทางการออกแบบจึงเลือกที่จะรักษาอาคารเดิมเอาไว้ และเติมโครงสร้างใหม่เข้าไปรอบๆ เพื่อให้เกิดการใช้ทรัพยากรที่มีอยู่ได้อย่างคุ้มค่าที่สุด ตัวอาคารเป็นอาคารสูง 2 ชั้นครึ่ง ตั้งอยู่บนพื้นที่ลาดชัน มีพื้นที่ใช้สอยรวมประมาณ 500 ตารางเมตร ประกอบด้วยพื้นที่ใช้งานดังนี้:
-ห้องพักจำนวน 10 ห้อง
-พื้นที่ล็อบบี้
-พื้นที่ส่วนกลาง
-พื้นที่บริการและส่วนหลังบ้าน (Back-of-house)
แนวความคิดในการออกแบบ (Concept Design / Design Idea)
สตูดิโอของเราเชื่อในกระบวนการออกแบบที่พัฒนามาจากบริบทและข้อจำกัดเฉพาะของพื้นที่ โดยแนวคิดเริ่มต้นของโครงการนี้เกิดขึ้นจากข้อจำกัดด้านกายภาพและการขนส่งในพื้นที่
เกาะเต่ามีอุปสรรคในเรื่องการขนส่งวัสดุ โดยเฉพาะวัสดุจำพวกหินทรายที่ต้องขนส่งทางเรือเท่านั้น ทำให้มีข้อจำกัดทั้งเรื่องปริมาณ ระยะเวลา และค่าใช้จ่าย ด้วยเหตุนี้ งานออกแบบจึงให้ความสำคัญกับการเลือกใช้วัสดุที่ขนส่งง่ายและสามารถก่อสร้างได้รวดเร็ว โดยเลือกใช้โครงสร้างเหล็กเป็นระบบโครงสร้างหลักของอาคาร
ความตั้งใจหลักของโครงการนี้คือการสร้างโรงแรมพักผ่อนในสไตล์เขตร้อน (Tropical Vacation Hotel) ที่มอบสภาวะน่าสบาย (Thermal Comfort) และมีความกลมกลืนไปกับบริบทโดยรอบ
การออกแบบมุ่งเน้นไปที่ 3 ประเด็นหลัก คือ
1. การออกแบบที่ว่าง (Space Design)
ตัวอาคารเน้นลักษณะใต้ถุนโล่งเพื่อเปิดรับการระบายอากาศตามธรรมชาติและช่วยให้ลมไหลเวียนผ่านตัวอาคารได้ดี นอกจากนี้ยังมีการออกแบบชายคาที่ยื่นยาวโดยรอบเพื่อปกป้องอาคารจากสภาพภูมิอากาศแบบเขตร้อน ทั้งในด้านการบังแดดและป้องกันฝน
2. ประสบการณ์ภายในห้องพัก (Guestroom Experience)
ห้องพักถือเป็นส่วนสำคัญในการสร้างประสบการณ์การพักผ่อน โดยเน้นการออกแบบที่ให้ความรู้สึกเหมือนบ้านพักตากอากาศ สร้างความต่อเนื่องอย่างไร้รอยต่อระหว่างพื้นที่ใช้สอยภายในและพื้นที่ระเบียงส่วนกลาง มีการนำ "เปลญวน" มาใช้เป็นองค์ประกอบตกแต่งเล็กๆ (Design Gimmick) เพื่อสะท้อนถึงกลิ่นอายท้องถิ่นและสร้างเอกลักษณ์ให้กับตัวอาคาร
3. บุคลิกของอาคาร (Building Character)
ดังที่กล่าวไปข้างต้น สตูดิโอของเราเชื่อในกระบวนการออกแบบที่พัฒนาไปพร้อมๆ กับบริบทของพื้นที่ ซึ่งนำไปสู่การคัดเลือกวัสดุที่ผสมผสานกับบริบทท้องถิ่นได้อย่างลงตัวที่สุด โดยมีการเลือกใช้วัสดุพื้นถิ่น (Local and Vernacular Materials) มากำหนดบุคลิกของอาคาร ในขณะเดียวกันก็ยังคงรักษาเส้นสายที่เรียบง่าย ทันสมัย เพื่อสะท้อนภาษาทางสถาปัตยกรรมร่วมสมัย
Small Boutique Hotel Design Project
This project is designed as a new addition integrated with the existing structure, as the site already contained an original building. Given that Koh Tao is a small island, demolishing the existing structure and rebuilding from scratch would generate a significant amount of construction waste. To minimize environmental impact, the design approach preserves the existing building and introduces new structures built around it, allowing efficient use of available resources.
The building is a two-and-a-half-storey structure located on a sloped site, with a total usable area of approximately 500 square meters. The program includes:
•10 guest rooms
• lobby
• Common areas
• Service and back-of-house spaces

Concept Design / Design Idea
Our studio strongly believes in a design process that evolves from both context and site-specific constraints. The initial concept for this project emerged from the physical and logistical limitations of the site.
Koh Tao presents challenges in terms of material transportation, particularly for materials such as sandstone, which must be delivered exclusively by boat. This results in limitations in availability, time, and cost. In response, the design prioritizes materials that are easy to transport and allow for fast construction. Steel structure was therefore selected as the primary structural system.
The overall intention of this project is to create a tropical vacation hotel that offers thermal comfort while remaining harmonious with its surrounding context.

Design Strategy
The design focuses on three main aspects:
1. Space Design
The building adopts an open-underneath (raised) structure, promoting natural ventilation and improving airflow throughout the building. To protect the building from the tropical climate, generous extended eaves are designed around the structure to provide shading and shelter from rain.
2. Guestroom Experience
Guest rooms play a key role in shaping the overall experience of the hotel. They are designed to evoke the atmosphere of a vacation retreat, emphasizing the seamless connection between interior living spaces and shared balcony areas. Hammocks are introduced as a subtle local element, serving as a small design gimmick that reinforces the building’s local identity.
3. Building Character
As mentioned earlier, our studio believes in an evolving design process throughout both design development and context . This approach led to a careful consideration of materials that best blend with the local context. Local and vernacular materials are therefore used to define the character of the building, while maintaining clean, contemporary lines to express a modern architectural language.
