إن إعادة تأهيل سوق الجمعة في دمشق لم تكن بالنسبة لنا مجرد مشروع تصميمي، بل رحلة بحث معمّقة في ذاكرة المكان وتاريخه، وفي كيفية تحويل هذا التراث الحي إلى فضاء معاصر يستوعب احتياجات المجتمع دون أن يفقد أصالته. السوق، الذي يقع على سفح جبل قاسيون في حي الصالحية، ليس مجرد محور تجاري، بل هو شاهد على قرون من التفاعل الاجتماعي والعمراني، يضم بين جنباته معالم روحانية ومعمارية مثل مقام محيي الدين بن عربي، والبيمارستان القيمري، والتكية السليمية، والمدرسة العمرية.
من هنا، جاءت مقاربتنا المعمارية مبنية على قراءة دقيقة للنسيج العمراني، وفهم علمي للمواد والوظائف التاريخية، وتحليل اجتماعي لدور السوق في الحياة اليومية الدمشقية. فكل تفصيل في التصميم كان امتدادًا لفكرة أوسع: كيف نعيد إحياء السوق ككيان نابض بالحياة يحترم الماضي ويستجيب للحاضر.
أولى الأفكار التي عالجناها كانت الساعة الشمسية. هذه التقنية التي اعتمدت على ظلال الشمس لتحديد الوقت لم تكن مجرد تفصيل زخرفي، بل كانت انعكاسًا لفكر علمي وفلكي متجذر في العمارة الإسلامية. وجودها على أحد جدران المباني القديمة في السوق شكّل مصدر إلهام لنا لإعادة إحيائها كعنصر رمزي ومعرفي، يربط الزائر بتاريخ السوق ويمنحه تجربة معمارية مرتبطة بالزمن ذاته.
أما في الجانب العمراني، فقد اقترحنا إعادة تنظيم الساحة في نهاية محور السوق عبر تبليطات مستوحاة من الأنماط التقليدية، تعكس تكرار الهندسة الإسلامية ورمزية الفراغ. هذه الأرضيات لم تكن مجرد معالجة سطحية، بل وسيلة لتوجيه الحركة وتعزيز المحور البصري. أضفنا إليها عناصر خضراء تعيد التوازن البيئي المفقود، مع إنارة مدروسة تسهم في إبراز ملامح المكان ليلًا دون أن تطغى على طابعه التاريخي.
تحديات التنقل والحركة اليومية فرضت علينا مقاربة وظيفية دقيقة. لذلك تم تخصيص مواقف منظمة للدراجات لتشجيع أنماط التنقل المستدامة، إلى جانب مواقف سيارات مخططة بعناية لتخفيف الضغط المروري، في محاولة لإيجاد حلول عملية لمعضلات معاصرة دون أن نضحي بجوهر المكان.
وعلى صعيد المشهد البصري، كان لا بد من إعادة تنظيم واجهات المحلات وتوحيدها بما ينسجم مع اللغة المعمارية الدمشقية. الهدف لم يكن فرض هوية جديدة، بل الكشف عن الهوية الكامنة خلف العشوائية، وإبراز روح الحِرفة والتقاليد العمرانية.
ومن العناصر المعاصرة التي أضفناها كانت المظلة المركزية. صممناها لتغطي الساحة وتوفر حماية من الشمس والمطر، لكنها في الوقت ذاته حملت طابعًا رمزيًا مستوحى من القباب والمظلات التقليدية، لتكون امتدادًا للعمارة التاريخية لا قطيعة معها.
كما قمنا بإعادة تنظيم البسطات الشعبية في مكان واحد مدروس، بحيث تحافظ على الطابع الحيوي للسوق وتعيد تنظيم حركة الزوار بطريقة تحترم الوظيفة الاجتماعية والاقتصادية لهذا الفضاء. هذه الخطوة لم تكن شكلية، بل كانت محاولة لإعادة الاعتبار للأسواق الشعبية كجزء أصيل من هوية دمشق.
وأخيرًا، كانت أسطح المباني جزءًا من الرؤية لإحياء الحياة في السوق. بدل أن تبقى خاملة أو مهمشة، تم تحويلها إلى كافيهات ومساحات اجتماعية، تمنح الزائر تجربة معمارية متعددة المستويات، وتفتح آفاقًا جديدة للتفاعل الاجتماعي والثقافي في قلب السوق.
⚜️ لقد كان هدفنا من هذا المشروع هو صياغة رؤية متكاملة تعيد سوق الجمعة إلى قلب دمشق: سوق ينبض بالذاكرة التاريخية، يتنفس من خلال نسيجه الاجتماعي، ويعيش بفضل مقاربة معمارية علمية تحترم الماضي وتحتضن المستقبل.

The rehabilitation of Souq Al-Jumaa in Damascus is not merely a design exercise—it is a profound journey into the memory of place, its history, and how to transform this living heritage into a contemporary urban space that embraces community needs without losing authenticity. Located on the slope of Mount Qasioun in Al-Salihiyah, this market is far more than a commercial axis; it has been a witness to centuries of social and urban interaction, surrounded by spiritual and architectural landmarks such as the Shrine of Muhyiddin Ibn Arabi, Al-Qaymari Bimaristan, Al-Salimiyah Takiyya, and Al-Omariyah School.
Our architectural approach was built upon a careful reading of the urban fabric, a scientific understanding of materials and historic functions, and a social analysis of the market’s role in everyday Damascene life. Every design decision extended from a central question: how can we revive the market as a living entity that honors the past while responding to the present?
One of the first ideas we addressed was the sundial. This technique, which relied on sunlight and shadows to measure time, was not simply decorative—it represented scientific and astronomical knowledge deeply rooted in Islamic architecture. Its presence on one of the old market walls inspired us to revive it as a symbolic and intellectual feature, reconnecting visitors with the site’s history and giving them an architectural experience tied directly to time itself.
On the urban level, we proposed redesigning the square at the end of the market axis with paving patterns inspired by traditional Islamic geometry, embodying both rhythm and symbolism. These ground treatments were not merely surface decoration but a tool to guide movement and strengthen the visual axis. To this, we added green elements to restore environmental balance, along with carefully designed lighting that highlights the market’s features at night without overwhelming its historic character.
Mobility challenges required precise functional responses. We introduced organized bicycle stands to encourage sustainable transport, as well as strategically planned parking areas to relieve congestion—practical solutions to contemporary problems without compromising the soul of the place.
Visually, it became essential to reorganize and unify shop façades, creating a harmonious architectural language that resonates with Damascene identity. The aim was not to impose a new identity, but to reveal the authenticity hidden beneath visual chaos, bringing craftsmanship and tradition back into focus.
Among the contemporary interventions, we designed a central canopy to cover the square. Inspired by traditional domes and coverings, it offers shade and shelter while standing as a symbolic extension of the historical architecture rather than a rupture from it.
We also reorganized street vendors into a designated space, preserving the market’s vibrant, popular character while improving circulation and the overall visitor experience. This was not a cosmetic move, but an acknowledgment of the vital role popular markets play in Damascus’ cultural identity.
Finally, the rooftops of surrounding buildings were reimagined as cafés and social terraces—no longer dormant, but alive with activity. These new layers of experience create fresh opportunities for social and cultural interaction, offering visitors elevated views and renewed connections to the market.
⚜️ The goal of this project was to craft a holistic vision that re-establishes Souq Al-Jumaa at the heart of Damascus: a market that breathes history, sustains social life, and thrives through an architectural approach that respects the past while embracing the future.
