Topographic survey: what it is, what you get, and when your project needs one.

A topographic survey captures the three-dimensional shape of the land — its contours, elevations, natural features (rivers, drainage, vegetation), and man-made features (roads, buildings, utilities, fences).

The output is a topographic map — the single most important base document for any infrastructure design project.

What a topo captures:
• Contour lines at regular intervals (0.5m, 1m, or 2m depending on terrain and project)
• Spot heights at critical points — road centrelines, drainage channels, building corners
• Natural features: rivers, streams, drainage channels, vegetation lines, rock outcrops
• Man-made features: roads, buildings, walls, fences, overhead lines, utility infrastructure
• Boundary features where required

Equipment we deploy:
→ Total Station — traditional, high precision, ideal for urban environments
→ RTK GNSS — fast, efficient for large areas, centimetre accuracy

What you receive:
• DXF/DWG file for AutoCAD and Civil 3D — directly usable by your engineer
• Contour and spot height data in QGIS/ArcGIS compatible format
• 3D terrain model
• Survey report with control point coordinates

When you need one:
→ Road design (alignment and drainage calculations require accurate ground profiles)
→ Building site development (cut and fill volumes need accurate topo data)
→ Dam and reservoir design
→ Drainage and sewerage system design
→ Any engineering project where earthworks are involved

The rule of thumb: if your engineer is designing something that will touch the ground, they need a topographic survey first. Designing without it is guessing — and guessing in construction is expensive.
