World Youth Skills Day 2026 | Empowering Youth, Transforming Africa

On this World Youth Skills Day, Joinafric celebrates the power of skills to unlock opportunities, foster innovation, and build resilient communities.

Our Mboolo Programme, recently featured by UNESCO's SDG 4 Knowledge Hub as a Good Practice in advancing youth entrepreneurship and skills development, demonstrates how practical learning, mentorship, and community engagement can empower young people to become agents of sustainable development.

As we mark this global day, we reaffirm our commitment to equipping young people with entrepreneurial, leadership, and civic skills that create lasting opportunities for individuals and communities across Africa.

We thank our partners, mentors, volunteers, and every young participant who continues to turn ideas into impact.

📢 The Evi4Dev 2025 Call to Action is now available!

One year after the inaugural Evidence for Development (Evi4Dev) Conference in Nairobi, the Evi4Dev 2025 Conference Call to Action has been officially released.

Built on contributions from 408 delegates representing 29 countries, the document sets out a shared vision for strengthening the role of data, evidence, and innovation in advancing Africa's development.

The Call to Action highlights priority areas including:
✅ Evidence-informed policymaking
✅ Science, Technology and Innovation (STISA 2034)
✅ Artificial Intelligence and digital innovation
✅ Youth innovation and domestic financing
✅ Food security and resilient food systems
✅ Health, education, and digital infrastructure

At Joinafric, we are proud to have contributed to these discussions through our research on "consumer behaviour, commercial integration, and evidence-driven food security policy", presented during Evi4Dev 2025.

As Africa works toward Agenda 2063, translating research into practical solutions and public policy remains essential. We encourage researchers, policymakers, innovators, and development practitioners to explore this important document and join the collective effort to build a more evidence-driven continent.

Joinafric est née d'une conviction forgée par la recherche. En 2010, une première étude scientifique, « La similarité des us et coutumes en Afrique subsaharienne : un socle pour une union africaine solide », posait les bases intellectuelles de ce projet : l'intégration africaine n'est pas une utopie, elle s'appuie sur un patrimoine commun profond.

Fondée en juin 2014 à Dakar, Joinafric traduit cette vision en action, en faveur d'un développement économique, social et politique ancré dans les réalités du continent. 12 ans après, l'engagement demeure intact.

Joinafric was built on a research foundation. In 2010, a scientific study, "The similarity of customs and traditions in sub-Saharan Africa: a foundation for a strong African union", laid the intellectual groundwork: African integration is not a utopia; it rests on a deep shared heritage.

Founded in Dakar in June 2014, Joinafric translates that vision into action, advancing economic, social and political development rooted in the continent's own realities. Twelve years on, the commitment holds.

🌍 Rethinking Economic Formalisation in Africa

At the CIDRA Conference 2026 in Dar es Salaam, Joinafric presented a new perspective on one of Africa’s most persistent challenges: economic informality.

📊 Our key message is simple but critical:

Formalisation is not only a regulatory issue, it is a governance and behavioural challenge.

The framework we developed highlights three interconnected pillars:

- Institutional capacity and coordination

- Behaviourally informed policy design

- Digital governance and cross-regional (Africa–EU) learning.

💡 What this means for policymakers:

Effective formalisation requires aligning institutions, citizen behaviour, and digital systems within a coherent governance framework.

This approach opens new pathways to:

- Strengthen public trust

- Improve policy effectiveness

- Promote inclusive and sustainable economic development

Together for health. Stand with science. But also stand with access.

On this World Health Day 2026, Joinafric reaffirms a simple but critical truth: science does not save lives if systems fail to deliver it.

Across many African contexts, millions still face a fundamental barrier, they must pay before receiving care.

This is where science must meet systems.

At Joinafric – Research and Innovation for Development in Africa, we advance evidence-based, equity-driven solutions that transform how health systems function in practice.
Our work presented at the Global Health Innovation and Quality Summit (GHIQS) 2025, demonstrates how low-cost, scalable models can remove financial barriers and enable timely care, especially for women and children.

Standing with science means:

- using data to anticipate needs and reduce risks,
- leveraging digital systems and AI to strengthen planning,
- designing health systems where no one is excluded at the point of care.

Because the future of health systems is not only about innovation, it is about who benefits, when, and under what conditions.

Pleased to share that Joinafric participated in the Social Capital 2026 Conference, bringing forward insights from Senegal on youth-led innovation and community development.

Our contribution focused on the Mboolo Program, a youth-driven initiative that explores how entrepreneurship, leadership, and civic engagement can serve as powerful mechanisms for building social capital. In contexts marked by structural youth unemployment, this work highlights how local, community-based solutions can foster trust, collaboration, and resilience.

This participation reflects Joinafric’s continued commitment to evidence-based research and innovation in advancing sustainable development across Africa. It was also an opportunity to engage with a global community of researchers, practitioners, and policymakers working at the intersection of social capital and development.

We extend our sincere appreciation to the organizers of Social Capital 2026 Conference, hosted by Heriot-Watt University Dubai, for creating a platform that fosters meaningful dialogue and cross-regional learning.

The program **“Mboolo – United Youth: One Community, One Project”** has been officially **validated and published as a best practice** in the SDG 4 Knowledge Hub of the UNESCO.

Joinafric at IBMA 2026 – Advancing Research and Innovation for Africa’s Food Systems

Joinafric – Research and Innovation (R&I) for Development in Africa was honored to participate in the International Conference on Business Models in Agriculture 2026 (IBMA 2026) held from March 8-11, 2026 at the Boardwalk Hotel & Convention Centre in South Africa.

Under the conference theme “AgriFuture: Connecting African Innovation to Global Markets – Showcasing Scalable Agribusiness Solutions for Rural Prosperity and Global Impact,” IBMA 2026 gathered researchers, policymakers, and agribusiness leaders to discuss innovative pathways for transforming agricultural systems and strengthening rural economies.

Joinafric contributed to the dialogue through a presentation under Sub-Theme 8: Building Food Systems Resilience for Value-Chain Transformation, which explores how stronger collaboration between public and private actors can enhance agricultural value chains and food systems.

The presentation, titled “Trade Integration and Cognitive Perspectives: Strengthening Food Security,” highlighted the importance of integrating market dynamics, consumer perceptions, and trade frameworks to support resilient food systems in Africa. It also emphasized the role of international and regional trade organizations such as the African Continental Free Trade Area and the World Trade Organization in strengthening agricultural markets and enabling inclusive development.

By bringing research insights and innovation-driven perspectives, Joinafric contributes to advancing knowledge on how trade integration, behavioral dynamics, and agricultural value chains can collectively improve food security and support sustainable development across Africa.

Joinafric – End-of-Year Statement 2025

As 2025 comes to a close, Joinafric reaffirms its commitment to evidence-based research, innovation, and policy engagement in support of inclusive and sustainable development in Africa.

This year was marked not by immediacy, but by consolidation. Across our research, programs, and partnerships, 2025 demanded rigor, patience, and strategic clarity. We strengthened analytical frameworks, deepened field-based evidence, and refined policy-oriented solutions addressing Africa’s structural challenges—particularly in youth employment, food systems, governance, health access, and economic sovereignty.

Throughout the year, Joinafric contributed to international academic and policy dialogues through peer-reviewed publications, conferences, and collaborative research. Our work continued to emphasize behavioral and cognitive approaches to public policy and institutional effectiveness, bridging research with practical and scalable solutions.

Programs such as Mboolo – United Youth, alongside applied research on agricultural markets, graduation approaches to extreme poverty, and inclusive public policy models, demonstrated that meaningful impact is cumulative. Progress often occurs quietly—through systems strengthened, capacities built, and ideas refined—before becoming visible at scale.

In 2025, Joinafric reinforced its role as a knowledge intermediary, translating research into actionable recommendations for policymakers, development partners, and civil society actors. Our engagement across Africa and international platforms reflects our conviction that locally grounded evidence must inform global development agendas.
