Most plants give you a warning before they die. A bit of yellowing, some droop, a few weeks to course-correct. Lavender isn't like that. With lavender, the damage is done the second the blades close, and you won't find out until next year.
The plant itself is nearly indestructible. Heat, drought, rocky soil, none of it bothers lavender much. But take your shears too far down the stem, past the point where the green growth stops and the bare wood begins, and that branch will never leaf out again. It can't. Lavender just doesn't regrow from old wood.
And before anyone decides the safe move is to skip pruning altogether, that backfires too. An unpruned lavender goes woody and sprawling, and those brittle old stems are the first thing to snap and split when winter hits.
So it comes down to one thing: reading the stem before you cut. There's a spot that tells you precisely how low you can go, and it's obvious once somebody points it out. Takes about five minutes a plant after that. Dropped the details in the first comment.
