Moving into a new HDB flat? I’ve walked this path many times — a good defect checklist saves time, money and stress. Here are practical steps to inspect your home like a pro:
• Break the flat into zones: walls, ceilings, flooring, doors/windows, electrical points, plumbing, kitchen/bathroom fixtures, balcony.
• Bring the right tools: checklist (print or digital), phone camera, flashlight, tape measure, level.
• Inspect room by room. Note specifics (e.g., “10cm hairline crack near living-room window”) and take photos.
• Prioritise: safety issues like leaks, electrical faults or structural cracks = high priority. Cosmetic fixes = low priority.
• Use a ready-made HDB defect checklist template to stay thorough and organised.
• Keep records and follow up: date-stamp photos, set reminders and confirm repairs are completed.
