Instinc

Instinc INSTINC is an artist-run institution that promotes a new language of art. Therefore in 2009, INSTINC's international artist residency program is launched.

Established in 2004, INSTINC is an artist-run institution founded by local artist Yeo Shih Yun, to promote a new language of art. Following the tradition of painting, INSTINC has pushed the paradigm to realize a wide array of art forms, including but not limited to installation, performance and video art. One of INSTINC's key missions is to encourage collaboration, cultural exchange and sharing of ideas in contemporary art with local as well as international artists. Through exhibitions, art workshops, artists' talks & collaborations, INSTINC aims to establish an exciting platform where artists and public can engage with contemporary art and critical discourses. To further promote the contemporary art scene in Singapore, in 2011, INSTINC spearheaded its inaugural “Squares Invasion” Painting Competition in search of artists in the forefront of contemporary painting. In 2014, INSTINC celebrated a decade of art and collaboration with 10 artists from around the world. In 2016, instinctive: a collective of local & international artists is born.

“form . residue” is a solo exhibition exploring the beauty of the Earth’s overlooked materials through two interconnected bodies of work: “Ashma” and “Mrida”. Mrida, derived from Sanskrit, means earth, soil, or clay, while Ashma means stone or rock. Together, they reflect the elemental materials that shape our landscapes, histories, and built environments.

Working with acrylic, limestone, natural earth pigments, and mineral-based materials, the abstract paintings draw directly from the colours, textures, and geological formations found within soil and stone. Layered surfaces and organic marks reveal the complexity embedded in these seemingly ordinary materials, challenging the perception of earth as merely “brown dirt” and stone as simply “grey rock.”

“form . residue” encourages a renewed way of seeing—one that uncovers the subtle beauty and complexity of earth and stone. Rather than reducing these materials to muted, monochromatic surfaces, the exhibition reveals their rich spectrum of colours, and textures, inviting viewers to appreciate the elegance of the world beneath their feet.

Meet the artist behind our upcoming exhibition As Intended, Lim Jia Qi.

Grounded in the cultural landscape of Singapore, Lim Jia Qi’s practice reflects on how urban design, nature, and lived experience shape the collective identity of the city. Her works trace the quiet tension between the natural and the man-made, revealing how carefully curated greenery, domestic interiors, and public housing spaces become sites of memory, aspiration, and belonging.

Trained as a printmaker, Lim approaches her practice as both an artist and observer of Singapore’s ongoing transformation. By merging printmaking and painting on carved wood panels, she reimagines traditional techniques through a contemporary Singaporean lens. Her process mirrors the city’s own balance between preservation and progress, where heritage and innovation intersect, and where nature, though carefully cultivated, becomes inseparable from urban life. Through these layered surfaces, Lim captures how human presence and planned order coexist, revealing the subtle poetry of Singapore’s constructed landscapes.

Her practice has garnered steady institutional and market recognition. Her work has since been featured internationally in Sandu Publishing’s ‘Craving Blocks: Printmakers and Their Stories’ (2023), presented at ART SG’s NEW/NOW(2025), and realized on an architectural scale through a commissioned public woodcut mural for the National Health Group at Serangoon Polyclinic (2025).

An interview with the artist Lim Jia Qi on her exhibition As Intended.

As Intended is a solo exhibition exploring Singapore’s urban landscape and the ways nature is incorporated, represented, managed, and experienced within the built environment. Drawing from Lim Jia Qi’s ongoing interest in Singapore’s everyday spaces, the exhibition brings together paintings on carved woodblocks and drypoint prints centred on familiar sites such as HDB void decks, sheltered walkways, building facades, and urban infrastructure. The works consider a city that is constantly being constructed, maintained, replaced, and renewed. Within this changing landscape, nature appears in many forms, from living trees and fleeting shadows to decorative motifs and designed representations. These different forms raise questions about what is natural, what is constructed, and how the two have become increasingly intertwined in Singapore’s urban environment.

As Intended reflects on a Singapore that is continually being made and remade. Through familiar urban spaces, representations of nature, and material processes that transform fleeting traces into lasting marks, the exhibition considers what is preserved, what disappears, and what remains in a changing city.

It asks viewers to look again at the ordinary spaces around them and consider the relationship between what has been deliberately constructed and what continues to exist beyond our intentions.
