Circle 2 of CNFC Circles brought Cai Bingyu (Ground-Up Initiative (GUI)) and Simone Lim (City Sprouts) to Common Ground Civic Centre, to sit with a question many of us in the impact sector know too well: how do we balance money and mission?

The honest answer: there isn’t a clear one. But what came up in our conversations was this: get the mission clear enough, and the money finds a way to follow.

“Focus on value first, not price.” Once the value is clear, you know if the price is worth paying.

Another idea we explored: the “Trojan horse” approach — meet people where they already are, whether they’re bought into your mission or not, and let the deeper mission reveal itself once trust is built.

There’s already a lot of conversation about why third spaces matter. Others have made that case better than we could. So instead, we want to think about what we can actually bring to it.

And what we that is is the chance for that case to be felt, experienced and embodied. For one day, at our third space, Common Ground Civic Centre, with our community of practitioners each advocating for their own versions of a third space.

Circle 1 of CNFC Circles brought us to Joo Chiat Social Club, where we got to hear from Bennett and Mariel, co-founders of this third space designed for intergenerational connection.

We sat with a simple but slippery question: are third spaces for Me, or for We?

As with everything in life, it’s not an either/or, but a polarity to manage. Take “Me” too far, and you get isolation. Take “We” too far, and you get burnout and resentment.

The skill — for anyone, not just impact practitioners — isn’t picking a side. It’s discernment: knowing when to course-correct toward self, and when toward collective.
