Which anti-pollution mask filters the most?

Researchers at Queen Mary University of London compared 5 commercially available masks using roadside London air. Totobobo ranked No.1, cutting black carbon (diesel soot) by 71%, well ahead of an FFP3 industrial respirator at 44%.

Published in Thorax (2017), a leading respiratory medicine journal from the BMJ. Totobobo had no involvement in funding or running the study.

Can a reusable mask survive repeated disinfection?

A 2022 study on the Totobobo mask tested a cleaning method using 70% ethanol, similar to a disinfection procedure used in healthcare settings.

The mask was fully immersed in 70% ethanol for 5 minutes, with the filters removed first. After cleaning and drying, the mask was tested again. This process was repeated 15 times.

The interesting part: the Totobobo mask retained its shape and remained fit-tested after repeated cleaning cycles.

This is important for a reusable mask. A mask is only useful if it maintains its fit over time, not just filters well when new.

The study also looked at how repeated ethanol cleaning affected fit performance and comfort.

“The effect of ethanol immersion on fit performance and comfort of a fit tested reusable mask”
Journal of Industrial Textiles, 2022

Research like this is one reason we designed Totobobo to be reusable, washable, and durable, rather than a disposable mask thrown away after each use.

One important detail: the study removed the filters before the ethanol treatment. The alcohol cleaning was for the mask itself, not the filter media.

This message from a customer in Boston made our day. 🚴

Li Jiun commutes 40km every day through heavy urban traffic. After 1.5 years of long rides, she started noticing health effects — thick mucus, dry cough — but stopping cycling simply wasn't an option.

"I am grateful for the mask such that I can still enjoy long rides in a busy urban city."

— Li Jiun Chen, Google Review ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

That's why we do what we do. Every filter changed, every kilometre ridden safely — it counts.
