ENERGY TECH CHALLENGERS ASIA 2026: WHERE ENERGY TECHNOLOGY MEETS REAL-WORLD NEEDS ⚡️

More than 400 startups applied, with 60 selected for the finals. But the numbers were not the most notable part of Energy Tech Challengers Asia 2026.

After seven years of growth in Europe, Energy Tech Summit held its first Asian edition in Kuala Lumpur on September 29-30. The event was supported by Malaysia’s Ministry of Energy Transition and Water Transformation (PETRA) and featured an address by Deputy Minister YB Dato’ Sri Haji Abdul Rahman bin Haji Mohamad.

What stood out was that the programme went beyond presenting new ideas. It brought startups, investors, corporations, and policymakers together to discuss how technologies can be validated, commercialised, and deployed within the real-world context of the APAC region.

PETRONAS, Malaysia’s national energy company, joined the programme as an Innovation Partner and presented specific priorities in industrial energy efficiency, waste heat recovery, advanced cooling, smart heat tracing, and next-generation insulation.

This offers a useful way to evaluate energy technologies: novelty is only the starting point. A solution must also show which operational problem it addresses, under what conditions it has been validated, and what further evidence or resources are needed before it can be deployed more widely.

Within this broader picture, CEO Hai Ho represented Alternō in two categories. Alternō was one of eight startups pitching in Climate Hardware X and also took part in the PETRONAS Tech Challenge Pitch.

WHEN CARBON IS PRICED, THE GREEN TRANSITION EQUATION CHANGES 🌎

In the latest issue of Vietnam Economic Times, Alternō CEO Hai Ho shares his perspective on Vietnam’s carbon market and the role of emissions-reduction technologies.

When we first speak with a factory about thermal energy storage, the first questions are usually: How much can this solution save, and how long will it take to pay back?

These remain important questions.👉🏻 But as carbon begins to carry a price, businesses must also consider the cost of emissions, international supply chain requirements, and their ability to demonstrate what has actually been reduced.

This is also why Alternō focuses on industrial heat. With our Sand Battery, we store renewable energy as heat and deliver it where factories need it, helping reduce their reliance on fossil fuels in day-to-day operations.

Reducing emissions is only half the challenge. The other half is measuring the results with reliable data, following proper verification processes, and preventing emissions reductions from being counted twice.

🎋 During your first six months, you will not be given a single sales script that works for every situation. Instead, you will have the opportunity to learn how to:

👉🏻 Observe a factory’s infrastructure and operations, identify missing information and ask the right questions before recommending the next step.

👉🏻 Translate customer needs into data and questions that our engineers can analyse, while explaining technical requirements in a way customers can easily understand.

👉🏻 Learn about different processes, industries and operating conditions, as every case requires a different approach.

THE CLOCK KEEPS RUNNING, AND SO DO WE 🏃🏻‍♀️⏳

At the Alternō office, there is a clock counting down to 2030. It reminds us that the window for turning climate commitments into action is getting shorter every day.

On September 2, UNEP released its Limiting Overshoot report. According to the report, under current policies and trajectories, exceeding 1.5°C of global warming is now widely considered difficult to avoid.

But crossing 1.5°C does not mean we should stop trying. How far temperatures rise, how long the overshoot lasts and how severe its impacts become still depend on the decisions we make today. Mitigation and adaptation must move forward together.

In Vietnam, that momentum now has a new place to come together. For the first time, Vietnam Climate Week 2026 will connect policymakers, investors, technology companies, businesses and communities across four cities, with more than 55 sessions and over 60 speakers:

Weather patterns are becoming more volatile and unpredictable than ever ⛈️☀️

From an energy tech perspective, these sudden weather swings are a vivid illustration of renewable energy intermittency. Solar generation can hit peak capacity one minute, only to drop sharply when storm clouds roll in just moments later.

Yet, agricultural drying lines and industrial heating systems can’t simply be switched on and off at the whim of the weather. Factory operations demand stability and 24/7 continuity.

That’s why energy storage solutions exist - acting as a "buffer" to bridge the gap between when energy is generated and when a facility actually needs to use it.

Amid these macro climate challenges, when looking at industrial thermal storage, there are three core principles we always share with our partners:

CEO Hai Ho joined NTT Partnership Day in Singapore, where selected startups took part in workshops and one-on-one meetings with representatives from NTT Group companies, corporate venture capital teams, and strategic partners 🤝

What stood out was how a large organization turns open innovation into meaningful connections, bringing internal challenges together with external resources, technologies, and fresh perspectives.

When it comes to major energy challenges, no single company or technology can have all the answers. Building technology is one part of the journey. Building the right connections to bring that technology closer to real-world applications matters just as much.

Today is September 2nd. While many are spending time with family, a shift at Alternō is present at the factory. Right now, we are preparing production for two upcoming export orders, so certain tasks are moving forward right on schedule.

Just a small group of teammates, showing up on time and quietly taking ownership of their responsibilities.

Technology isn't built only during moments in the spotlight. It is also forged on very ordinary days, by individuals who quietly take responsibility for every small detail ⚒️

81 years ago, independence was declared in words. Since then, each generation has preserved and built upon it in its own way: some through sacrifice, some through agriculture, and others through the country's first factories.

🌱 Our generation carries a different task: mastering new technologies, strengthening manufacturing capabilities, and striving for energy independence.

From our connection trip in Tokyo to the Vietnam-Japan Innovation Forum on August 13 at NIC Hoa Lac, Alternō had the opportunity to engage with businesses, investors, and ecosystem partners from both nations. More importantly, these practical conversations helped us gain a deeper understanding of safety standards, compliance, and deployment requirements when entering a new market.

🌟 At the NIC Scale X Demo Day, Alternō was deeply honored to present our technology to Former Deputy Prime Minister Nguyen Chi Dung and the official delegation as they visited the startup exhibition.
