The Building Futures Initiative is led through a long-term partnership between ROOTS Cambodia Roots Cambodia and WeCreate Studio WeCreate Studio, bringing together local knowledge with design and project expertise.

Our work is built on years of collaboration. From education programmes and mobile libraries in Cambodia to community-led architecture and healthcare projects across Southeast Asia, these experiences continue to shape how we approach every new initiative: by listening first, designing responsibly, and working alongside the communities we serve.

What if a school could do more than educate?

The Eco-Craft Village is our vision for a place where learning, livelihoods, culture, and environmental stewardship come together.

We are co-designing a community hub that supports students, families, artisans, and visitors alike. Every space has been designed to encourage learning through doing, preserve traditional crafts through innovation, create new opportunities for sustainable livelihoods, and inspire environmental responsibility.

More than a collection of buildings, the Eco-Craft Village is a long-term investment in the people of Kan Chor Village. A place where education extends beyond the classroom and where the village itself becomes a living environment for learning collaboration, and opportunity.

What does meaningful change look like?

For us, it isn’t about delivering a building. It’s about creating opportunities for communities to shape their own future.

The Building Futures Initiative is a long-term partnership between WeCreate Studio and ROOTS Cambodia that empowers sustainable livelihoods, regenerative education, and environmental stewardship through a process of co-design.

Since 2019, we have worked alongside the Kan Chor community through conversations, workshops, research, and hands-on projects. Each step has helped us refine a shared vision rooted in the community’s strengths, aspirations, and ideas.

Enjoying the Garden of Harvest at Dabu Hakka Building 大埔客聚楼

A very refreshing morning walk through the levels of initmate courtyards and gardens of abundance, while waiting for the judging panels from Design Business Chamber Singapore to arrive, for the site tour as we advance to the 2nd screening of the Singapore Good Design Award for the Special Mentiom, Gold or Platinum Distinctions.

It was quite therapeutic walk mid week, to see the herbs gardens, papaya, sugarcane, banana trees and so many berries growing so well. Credits to our landscape designer from compound collaborative for that.

Alvin Liau and Trecia Lim had great fun, recalling the aspiration we had during the competion and the journey of fruitation to the judging panel.

Hopefully more good news to come!

Before we can create meaningful change, we must first understand the people, culture and aspirations of the community.

Over the years, WeCreate Studio and ROOTS Cambodia have spent time listening, learning, and building relationships with the community of Kan Chor Village in Siem Reap. Through conversations and research, we gained a deeper understanding of both the opportunities and challenges that shape everyday life.
