We sat down with Emily Marzocchi on Design After Class, and she broke down exactly what reviewers are actually looking for in a portfolio. Hint: it’s not your render skills.

If you've ever looked at a real client brief and thought "I'm too junior for this", read on.

Villa Emmeline started exactly there. It's the winning kitchen proposal by Reine Jaber and she put her hand up before she felt fully ready. She mapped the space around the kitchen triangle, zoned it into wet, cold and hot areas, and worked the small problems most people walk straight past: an awkward step solved with a closed pantry, a two-sided credenza serving both the kitchen and the dining room, fluted glass keeping the light moving through to the corridor.

Here's the thing about feeling too junior: the brief doesn't care how many years you've got. It cares whether you've thought it through.

Alghero, on Sardinia's northwest coast, terracotta rooftops, sharp Mediterranean light, kitchens that earn their keep β˜•

Villa Emmeline is a 23mΒ² kitchen designed by Aisyah Radhiah for a holiday rental on the island. The palette pulls from the island vernacular: white shaker cabinetry, brass detailing, a black stone counter for grounding, reeded glass that filters the Sardinian light, and exposed beams left in their original character.

Then the surprise: a bifold cabinet that conceals an entire breakfast nook, lined in warm oak and lit from within. Closed, it disappears. Open, it's the warmest corner in the room.

Year 1 of interior design practice is mostly absorbing things no you did not learn at school. This is the kind of thing TLDP Juniors work through with Mentors every project, partly so when it hits, it lands a little softer.

Which one hit hardest? Drop the number πŸ‘‰

What working with TLDP can look like as a Junior:
β†’ Claudia designs the bedrooms. client loves them.
β†’ Scope extends to the corridors.
β†’ One of our other Juniors takes it from sketch to the first submission without a single round of revisions.

Junior designers deserve real scope, real client exposure, and real portfolio wins. If you know you deserve this, apply in the πŸ”— link in our bio for studio experience that actually counts.

Project briefs at TLDP look a lot like the ones you've been doing in school 🀝
Same structure. Same skills. Just a real client, a real space, and a real budget on the other side.

If you've put together a school project brief, you've already done most of this.

your CV shouldn't sound like everyone else's ChatGPT prompt. πŸ‘€

a recruiter can tell. a hiring manager can tell. and it's costing graduates their shot.
swipe to hear exactly why authenticity is still the thing that gets you hired, straight from someone who's been on both sides of the table.
