Astrid Lindgren’s Home, Dalagatan 46, Stockholm.
Astrid Lindgren lived here from 1941 until her death in 2002. Since then, the apartment has been preserved with very few alterations.
As part of an extensive replacement of the building’s plumbing and technical installations, the apartment has undergone a restoration. In many ways, the task was the opposite of a conventional apartment renovation – to carry out major changes while making them as invisible as possible.
The work began with detailed documentation. Electrical outlets, light fixtures, joinery and furnishings were measured and recorded so they could later be returned to their exact positions. Wallpapers, colours and surface finishes have been recreated.
Following extensive work, the changes are barely noticeable. Even the distinctive scent of the apartment has returned.
