New work in collaboration with artist being installed in Karlstad. Three pavilion-like sculptures that together form the shape of a boat hull, placed along the new infrastructural bypass Vikenförbindelsen.

Looking forward to seeing the groundwork and lighting finished for the inauguration in June. More info coming soon.

Currently in progress: A public artwork for the infrastructural bypass Vikenförbindelsen in Karlstad, Sweden. It consists of three sculptural works placed from east to west at different locations along the bypass.

The artwork takes its point of departure in a boat hull – in the skeleton and shell that form the interface between boat and water. The three sculptures can together form a single continuous hull, as if they originate from one and the same vessel divided into architectural signs.

The intervention is anchored in Viken’s history through Wennberg’s Mechanical Workshop and its ship production from the early 1900s. We draw from Wennberg’s original drawings of a tugboat from 1916. The artwork connects to the vision’s three concepts: time, movement, and the changes of light.
The sculptures evoke portals and pavilions – spatial enclosures that embrace the human body and form small stages along the route. Their placement from east to west follows the sun’s movement from morning to evening, each piece aligning itself with the the rays of the sun at a certain time of the day.

The title För-bindelse-akter links the ship’s bow (för) with its stern (akter), while simultaneously pointing to the connection (förbindelse) itself. Through all parts of the artwork, we want to activate the entire Vikenförbindelsen and contribute to a continuous urban environment.

The artwork is a collaboration between the artist David Svensson and Max Gerthel for Karlstads kommun.

This weekend I finally brought this frame back to life with some simple hand tools. Originally born in Beijing, [untitled] Armchair is a play with contrasts. The minimal, uncompromised frame was wrapped with soft nylon straps, echoing my ambition to cross Donald Judd with Bruno Mathsson. As a designer I never compromise function or comfort so the [untitled] series is a serious attempt at creating a chair that is used and cherished over a long life.

I made the latest version with leather offcuts, carefully pieced together to make a unique pattern for each seat. I love how the uneven edges of the leather fit into each other like pieces of a puzzle.

The [untitled] series are made and sold by STUDIO MAX GERTHEL, don’t hesitate to DM if you are interested.

This extension to a small railway lineman's house from the early 1900's in rural Skåne is designed for a young family of four. The new building doubles the living area while maintaining the existing kitchen. We will use old and leftover windows and doors bought at second hand construction markets. The wood cladding will be sourced from a demolished garage. The facades will thus be redesigned as we start collecting materials, leaving a lot of decisions left to chance. I'm excited to follow this project over the next year, planning permit will be submitted in the coming weeks.

STUDIO MAX GERTHEL will present a new design project called MUQARNAS, developed as a part of 3.0 with Form/Design Center and funded/organised by Region Skåne

I was teamed up with BetongDesign to develop a new washbasin made with low-carbon concrete. The basin uses geometry from Islamic architecture and patterns to optimise the shell, using minimum material for the mould as well as the concrete substance.

The exhibition opens November 29 at Form/Design Center in Malmö.

The [untitled] Chair has lived many lives and appeared in many shapes and colours. First designed in 2013, it was produced by WAM/万物 a brand I started with my friend Wula . In Beijing Design Week 2014 we worked in a courtyard in Dashilar, a historic district in Beijing, weaving the seats and backs of nylon strap onto the frames. The chairs were later used in the studio of . I brought the remaining frames back to Sweden and until now they have been in my basement. But after a repainting, they are now put back into use, covered in leftover leather cutoffs. Available at
