Reduce. Reuse. Recycle. ♻️

Affordable prices allow us to regularly refurbish our homes. But the sad reality is whilst we try to keep up with the latest trends furniture is being discarded too soon and contributing to our landfill sites.

A bit of imagination goes a long way and my client had it in abundance! Reupholstery can give new life to furniture and this Ikea armchair has been transformed into a real showpiece.

The fabric takes inspiration from Japanese gardens in a palette of spiced shades 🪷🌾🌸 Be bold and choose to reupholster your furniture with adventurous patterns - you won’t regret it 🤸🏼‍♀️✨

In the Seventeenth Century trading connections further encouraged an interchange of concepts and designs, with caning becoming a popular technique. Canework, traditionally of Chinese origin, was imported from India by Dutch traders and it found instant approval in the 1660s. Cane never overtook the status of textiles, but its use as a flexible and ornamental material for chair seats, backs (and in this case arms) confirmed its popularity, especially as it gave a less expensive technique of covering chair components. By the end of the century cane-workers had proven themselves as part of the furniture-making profession.

Today covered in the gorgeous Pronto in Poppy - the cat also approves! 🐈‍⬛ Swipe for before 👉🏼

sitting on my werk werk werk werk werk werk 😸

I had an out of this universe opportunity last July to work on the set of featuring the one and only Rihanna for the November 2019 issue!

Working as part of the set team I created the upholstery on site. I was presented with the design concept of selecting definitive lines in the furniture, to be emphasised by the seams in the loose covers. The aim was to achieve a simplistic beauty.

It was the most nerve wracking but definitely best experience of my working life. Thank you so much to the lovely Julia for this opportunity, it will be one that I treasure forever 💚

Why don’t we maintain things instead of throwing them away

The V&A Museum’s furniture up-cycling project was an open call for designers to give waste materials (in this case packing crates used for transporting artwork) a meaningful life beyond its initial limited purpose.

Working with furniture maker Nik Ranpura (HODD.House) and fellow upholsterer Ayesha Sowani () we created an up-cycled and upholstered bench in response to how we can transform something deemed as waste into a useable and long lasting piece.

The array of furniture created by over 50 designers was used as part of London Design Festival to host a discursive dining experience around climate change and the role design can take in environmental sustainability. This project has been brilliant in igniting people’s imagination of what our ‘waste’ can create. The furniture will also fulfil a community purpose and be donated to The Peoples Kitchen and Henry Dickens Art Therapy spaces.

It’s been a hugely ambitious project and I’d like to thank for the opportunity to be involved with all these fantastic makers!
