Introduction to Electrical Panels & Their Functions
Electrical panels are an essential part of any electrical power system. They are designed for "power distribution, protection, control, monitoring, and reliable operation" of electrical equipment.
Below is a brief introduction to some commonly used electrical panels:
1. RMU — Ring Main Unit
Use: RMU is mainly used in medium-voltage distribution systems. It receives and distributes electrical power and provides safe isolation and protection of the electrical network.
2. MDB — Main Distribution Board
Use: MDB is the main low-voltage distribution panel. It receives power from the transformer or main source and distributes it to different sub-distribution panels and major loads.
3. Bus Coupler Panel
Use: A Bus Coupler connects two busbar sections through a circuit breaker, normally an ACB. It provides flexibility and continuity of power supply and allows one bus section to support the other when required.
4. APFC — Automatic Power Factor Correction Panel
Use: An APFC panel automatically improves the power factor by switching capacitor banks according to the load requirement. It helps reduce reactive power, improve system efficiency, and minimize power-factor penalties.
5. Synchronization Panel
Use: A Synchronization Panel is used to synchronize two or more power sources, such as generators and the utility supply, by matching voltage, frequency, phase sequence, and phase angle before connecting them together.
6. SMSB — Sub Main Switch Board
Use: SMSB receives power from the MDB and distributes it to different areas, buildings, floors, or major electrical loads through multiple outgoing MCCB feeders. It provides protection and controlled sub-level power distribution.
7. PCC — Power Control Center
Use: PCC is used for centralized power distribution, control, protection, and monitoring of electrical systems. It is commonly used for large electrical loads and industrial facilities.
8. MCC — Motor Control Center
Use: MCC is specifically designed for controlling and protecting motors. It contains motor feeders and control/protection devices such as MCCBs, contactors, overload relays, and other control components.
9. ATS — Automatic Transfer Switch Panel
Use: ATS automatically transfers the electrical load from the normal power source to an alternative source, such as a standby generator, when the main supply fails. It then transfers the load back when the normal supply is restored.
10. DBS — Distribution Board
Use: DBS is used for final distribution of electrical power to lighting, sockets, small power, and other final circuits. It normally contains outgoing MCBs/MCCBs and provides protection and isolation for individual circuits.
Why These Panels Are Important
Each panel has a specific role within the electrical distribution system. Together, they help ensure:
• Safe power distribution
• Electrical protection
• Reliable operation
• Efficient power management
• Easy control and monitoring
• Continuity of power supply
Understanding the purpose and operation of each panel is essential for every electrical professional, especially for engineers, supervisors, technicians, and beginners entering the field.
Safety First • Quality Always • Reliable Power
