The woodlouse under your plant pot is not an insect. It is a terrestrial crustacean — a direct relative of crabs and shrimps. Its lineage stretches back more than 300 million years and it is the only crustacean to have fully adapted to life on land. 🌿
What it does down there: it chews dead leaves, rotting wood, and organic debris and converts them into nutrients that plant roots can absorb directly. An active colony processes organic matter faster than many garden compost setups.
It rolls into a ball for a reason — its segmented exoskeleton forms a complete shield protecting its legs and gills. Yes, gills. It breathes through modified gills on its underside, which is why it needs constant moisture and why it appears under stones, pots, and logs.
It does not bite. It does not sting. It carries no disease. It does not damage living roots or green leaves. If it appears in your garden, the soil has moisture and organic matter — precisely what a plant needs.
The next time you lift a stone and see a group curling up, leave them. They are your living compost 🌱
