POET ARCHITECTURE art . architecture... and poetry. There are innumerous sources of inspiration. I believe in those resulting from a close and prolonged observation.

Not all doors are alike. A wall without a door is a prison or a fortress. An open door shows. A closed door compels us to imagine. A door is not only an image. It has body, it is felt: the weight as it gives way, the temperature of the handle, the sound it makes as it closes. Each has an identity of its own. This one stands in a courtyard. Throughout the day the sky changes, and the wall receives that change. The door does not. Its orange is a constant force. It is the only element in the courtyard that does not depend on light to exist. It is presence. Its size is not innocent either. It rises from the ground to the top of the wall: it does not open the wall, it cuts through it. It is taller than the body that passes through it. Only in the handle do we perceive the human scale. While it is closed, we do not know what lies on the other side, and that mystery holds us. It is boundary, passage and closure at once, and it need not choose. Before we open it, we are already in dialogue with it.

Casa d'Abreu Neto by Álvaro Siza. Matosinhos, Portugal, 1954-1956. Photograph: Casa d'Abreu Neto Archive.

Siza's first work, designed while still a student for Fernando Neto and Maria Fernanda d'Abreu. It never left the family: today it is in the hands of their granddaughter, Maria Manuel Neto.

Between 2022 and 2024, Siza himself renovated it. Not a museum, but a living experience of architecture, through stays, visits, events and gatherings.

The documentary "O Primeiro Siza", produced by Building Pictures, tells of the architect's return to his first work, decades later. Available on Filmin and CaixaForum+.

The book "O Nosso Arquitecto", by Maria João Neto, daughter of the original owners, tells the story of the house and the d'Abreu Neto family.
