Jackie Kennedy picked an unknown architect for the Kennedy Library and was told she was wrong. 🏛️

In 1964 she interviewed candidates including Louis Kahn, Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, and Alvar Aalto, some of the most celebrated architects alive. She chose I.M. Pei, who was forty-six, Chinese-born, and had built almost nothing of significance. He later said he was astonished, and that she told him she had chosen him because she believed in his promise.

It took fifteen years. The original Cambridge site collapsed under local opposition over traffic and development. The project moved to Columbia Point in Dorchester. Designs were revised repeatedly. She sat through the meetings for the entire duration.

The building was dedicated in October 1979. Pei went on to design the East Building of the National Gallery, the Louvre pyramid, and the Bank of China tower, and he described the Kennedy commission as the making of his career.

She was thirty-five when she picked him and forty-nine when it opened.
