SÃO MARÇAL.
The story of an extraordinary (complex) ceiling and roof.
We go above and beyond, and behind the scenes.

Craft is always at the core of what we do at the Studio, as is a deep grasp of all the materials we need to understand, use, transform and translate into any final structural form.
Sometimes a project has technical complexities which take a turn for the unexpected, as we find things which demand a twist and turn to what was planned initially (which Architect hasn’t been surprised by what she/he finds?).
The wood structure of the inner roof at SÃO MARÇAL, which exposes a complex and delicate “net” which is almost Lisbon in a nutshell, was so intricately challenging to grasp that it became a symbol for the project itself.
A house which is apparently simple from the outside usually hides truly complex (and layered) secrets, and that happened here.
As the saying goes, Lisbon has the ability to play its tricks just right.
What you can witness here is part of an extensive, experimental and exhaustive renovation, and the visible side of a lengthy restoration and singular re-structuring work.
All these adjectives cannot hide one simple fact: how something up in the air defined everything which lies beneath.
Some challenges defy the odds, others become a sort of oddity, the best can provoke an entire overhaul (as did this).
SÃO MARÇAL has a particular beauty in its reconfiguration of size and scale, and managed to overcome many constraints and complexities by translating vernacular codes into practical solutions.
You’ll see soon how it turned out.
Above and beyond, and just about to happen.

A bespoke Collection defined by a Collaboration.

As we got back to the Studio on Monday morning after the hectic days of LDW26, and as Emails started to fill up our inboxes as usual and projects a bit around the country needed our full daily attention, we had 4 new “members” of the Team standing by as guardians (and reminders) of these last days.
An Armchair, a Wall-Light, an Ottoman and a Standing Lamp (tall as a lighthouse and shiny as a miner’s lantern) reminded us of months of going back and forth between Maastricht and Antwerp through calls and exchanges of sketches and drawings.
These 4 pieces represent a great team work and define the many possibilities of what a collaboration can bring to a table (besides good chocolate cake).
The process, meticulous and methodic, of creating something unique, was also whimsical and playful.
By putting many concepts and ideas to work (the Neves-Corvo Mine resources and researches, miner’s lamps old photos, levels of oxidation, erosion and corrosion angles, amongst so many things), alongside a beautiful exercise in creating something shaped by many hands, we figured out that it is possible to do something together which lasts.
The patina we now see on each piece, shining through thousands of different angles as the light hits our Gallery’s windows, showcase the serendipity of this challenge.
The 4 pieces formed a group, which has a particular setup, and works as a tandem.
There are 4 letters in (MINE)ral, and three add-ons.
4 pieces were made by 3 Studios.
7 letters in total, showcased on a city of 7 hills.
Now that’s serendipity.

The balance between possible and poetic.

As LDW26 kicked off, and as the idea we all had to do something singular took form, many things came to mind.
The first talks, calls, sketches, doubts, concepts and a few logistical problems to solve, soon turned into the fact that we had to put on a great show.
Not only to close a chapter, which started with the idea to work with copper, but also to push it further and turn it into objects which we could relate to, and which could be relatable.
As we opened our Gallery, and hundreds of people passed by, that idea also became theirs.
Those objects are not ours anymore (although you would have to kick-box Nick to move them), as they lift off.
Any pattern and texture you see in the set-piece was intentionally created, and it did not exactly happen by chance.
But even if we made everything from scratch again using the same methods and tools, and hands, it would not look the same. SERENDIPITY.
It defines us as a Team and as a Collab.
It also defines us as a creative force: you can’t shape, or change, everything alone.
There’s always the poetry of chance encounters.

Thank you to the hundreds who have visited us (and we’re still going on), and who saw and touched what touched us all in the beginning.
Together, always.
That did not happen by chance.
Our loving ST VINCENTS dog, Frida, is waiting back home in Antwerp for the big chance of getting a treat.

Down a mine we go.
The Neves-Corvo experience (what some call the light at the end of a tunnel).

A few years ago the Studio did something singular which travelled around the world: a furniture collection with rock-salt.
By trying something new, and unorthodox, we gathered a lot of experience by going down a few mines and meeting the people that, well, make it happen.
At the comfort of our homes, and within a world constrained and cornered by Social Media, we sometimes forget where things come from, or how anything is made. For real.
We also forget who makes them, and how those people work.
Our research for this edition of LDW26 demanded a closer look about how copper is extracted, and created an opportunity to understand what we could do with it.
Our collaboration is therefore also with a fourth partner we now make visible: the Boliden Neves-Corvo Mine.
As such, we extend a warm thank you for all that we learned down under.
This exhibition is also part of the magic they provided. As hosts, and as teachers, we couldn’t have had better guidance, and inspiring insights.
Someone said that what happens in the deep, stays in the deep.
Well, something always manages to come up.
This is it.

A singular and whimsical collaboration based on the journey between extraction and experience.
Everything and everyone adds up.

We all like to talk about collaborations one way or the other when the argument of joining forces, and creative drives, makes sense on specific briefings and challenges.
Two tend to think better than one, and every extra hand helps.
But collaborations nowadays seem to be more about joining one another for an open and endless discussion or workshop, than about getting your hands dirty.
For Lisbon Design Week 2026 our Studio is joined at the hip (although Nick beats us all in height), to produce something which was born out of simple curiosity: what would happen if we started talking between the three of us to find out if we could design, produce and assemble original prototypes for a bespoke furniture series?
Working together, in tandem. Simple, right?
Could an initial idea turn into a final object?
Using the extraordinary and rarely seen experience of going down a mine, we soon understood that what we could do together could push us all besides the usual collab “brainstorming” experience.
In a way, talking drove us to testing.
A great collaboration is therefore defined not only by reaching consensus, but also by drawing conclusions.
Ours is actually quite simple: ST VINCENTS has the lead on the most loving dog (Frida).

On May the 27 we will unveil a new bespoke series at the Studio’s Gallery during LDW26.
Nick will still be the tallest of us all by then.
Now that’s a consensus.

Lisbon Design Week 2026.
Studio Gameiro x ST VINCENTS x Nick Valentijn.
A singular collaboration, from extraction to extraordinary.

As a Studio which has always ran away from one shots and ephemeral exercises which tend to prioritise theatrical sets, we thrive on creating something which lasts and which makes sense.
For this edition of Lisbon Design Week we worked on something which made us write, talk, think, exchange, share, support and essentially work as a tandem with people whose creative vision and work we happen to love. Common sense.
MINE(ral) takes our Studio back to a “stage” which has also given us extraordinary work over the last years: a mine.
As we developed something together, we were able to revisit and rethink the notions of depth and surface, and the narrative of layering over.
Subtracting or adding up, tentatively.
What does it mean to transform something which is extracted from the underground?
What does it mean to create objects which have been carefully “handed over” as prime matter?
Design Weeks should also be about showcasing a specific process, not only a product, right?
That’s where the narrative starts, and the plot thickens. Common sense.
