Official Residence of the Czech Embassy in Lisbon • Interior design of the residence's representative spaces.

Diplomatic spaces rarely serve a single purpose.

Within the same rooms, the residence hosts official meetings, cultural events, private conversations, receptions and chamber concerts. The interior therefore had to remain adaptable without losing its sense of order.

At the centre of the proposal is a custom-designed modular seating system, developed specifically for the residence and produced by the Portuguese manufacturer MOBNOR. The modules can be arranged as a conversational island, a linear seating configuration or two facing compositions for formal meetings. The furniture adapts to each occasion while maintaining a consistent architectural language throughout the space.

The most significant intervention in the residence is also one of the softest.

Full-height curtains were introduced across the generous glazed openings in two layers. A lighter fabric filters Lisbon's intense southern light throughout the day, while a heavier curtain improves acoustics and creates a more intimate atmosphere for evening events. Without altering a single wall, textile transformed the experience of the space — changing how light is perceived, how sound travels and how the space feels.

Sometimes architecture is not about adding more, but about changing the way a space is inhabited.

The residence carries a history that predates the current diplomatic function of the house.

Long before the project began, marble floors, stone-clad bathrooms, granite window surrounds and fireplace details had already become part of its identity. Each element reflects a particular moment in the building's story and the vision of its original owner. Rather than introducing a completely new aesthetic, the project started by understanding these existing layers and their relationships. The design was conceived as a continuation of the house's narrative — one that respects its past while preparing it for a new chapter.

Anthropocene Luminaire | Coming soon

A new object in development at the atelier.

The Anthropocene Luminaire is made from discarded fishermen’s nets, worn out through years of use at sea. Collected in small fishing ports along the Portuguese coast, each net is cleaned, sorted, and reshaped by hand.

Beyond their working life at sea, the nets find a new purpose — reshaped into a lighting object.

The first prototypes were developed within The Anthropocene Apartment at the Lisbon Architecture Triennale 2025.
