People sometimes ask why taking down one tree keeps us busy most of a day.

Here's what's actually going on, because the slow part is the whole point.

When a large tree stands close to a house, a fence, a greenhouse, or the neighbour's garden, we don't just fell it. There's nowhere safe for it to fall. So we climb it and take it apart from the top down, piece by piece.

Every cut is a decision. Where will this piece swing once it's free. What's directly underneath it. Is the wood sound, or is there hidden rot that changes how it'll behave. Which limb is taking the strain, and what happens to the rest of the tree once that limb is gone.

A rushed crew can get a tree down faster. The risk is they get it down through your roof, or onto the patio you laid last summer.

We rig the heavy sections on ropes and lower them under control, so a piece that weighs more than a person lands exactly where we choose, gently, instead of wherever gravity fancies.

It looks slow because it's careful. The careful version is the one where nothing gets broken and everyone goes home in one piece.

That judgement, knowing what a tree will do before it does it, is the actual job you're paying for. The chainsaw is the easy part.
