Puerto Rico is approaching an important change in its spatial reference system—and its impact will extend beyond the surveying profession.

On September 16, our President and Principal Surveyor will present the seminar:

A common misunderstanding in infrastructure surveying is that more technology automatically means better data. That is not always true.

A point cloud with millions of points is not useful unless it is controlled, checked, registered, and prepared for the design team’s needs.

A UAV image may look impressive, but it may not capture ground conditions under vegetation or satisfy the required accuracy.

A bathymetric survey must be tied to the correct horizontal and vertical control to be useful for engineering.

Good survey data is not about volume alone. It is about reliability, relevance, control, documentation, and suitability for the intended use.

When an architectural or engineering firm asks for a “mensura,” the first step should be to clarify the purpose.

Do you need property lines?
Do you need title or easement information?
Do you need existing site features only?
Do you need elevations and contours?
Do you need drainage or utility information?
Do you need to document completed construction?

Those answers help determine whether the project needs a boundary survey, existing conditions survey, topographic survey, as-built survey, or a combination.

Clear scope at the beginning helps avoid confusion later.

Puerto Rico is entering an important transition in land surveying and geospatial data.

The familiar NAD83 and PRVD02 references are being modernized through the National Geodetic Survey’s new National Spatial Reference System.

That means the same physical point may eventually have different coordinate or elevation values depending on the reference system being used.

For engineers and infrastructure teams, knowing the datum and reference frame behind the numbers will become increasingly important.
