Completed in 2018, UNIKATO is a residential building in Katowice, Poland, designed by Robert Konieczny’s KWK Promes. Its dark façade was inspired by the city’s once-light modernist buildings, which gradually darkened after decades of exposure to industrial pollution.

The projecting balconies are also functional, not just sculptural. Their orientation helps some apartments capture more southern light, while the solid balustrades provide privacy and conceal everyday storage from the street.

Built on a very limited budget with simple materials — plaster, white plastic windows and economical construction methods — UNIKATO turned those constraints into its defining architectural language.
