Diriyah City (Saudi Arabia)
Diriyah is one of the most historically significant cities in Saudi Arabia, located just northwest of Riyadh. It is often called the birthplace of the Saudi state and holds deep political, cultural, and religious importance.
Historical Importance
Diriyah was the original home of the Al Saud family.
In the 18th century, it became the capital of the First Saudi State under Imam Muhammad ibn Saud.
The famous alliance between Imam Muhammad ibn Saud and Sheikh Muhammad ibn Abdul Wahhab began here, shaping the foundations of modern Saudi Arabia.
In 1818, Diriyah was destroyed during the Ottoman–Egyptian campaign led by Muhammad Ali Pasha, but its legacy remained strong.
At-Turaif District (UNESCO Site)
At-Turaif is Diriyah’s most iconic area and a UNESCO World Heritage Site (since 2010).
Built in traditional Najdi mud-brick architecture, it includes palaces, mosques, and administrative buildings.
Notable structures include Salwa Palace, once the seat of governance.
