🔧 WHAT IS CHILLED-WATER ΔP?

Understanding Differential Pressure in a Chilled-Water System
Differential pressure (ΔP) is an important reading in chilled-water HVAC systems. It helps engineers understand the pressure difference available between the supply and return sides of the system.

💧 WHAT DOES ΔP MEAN?

ΔP = Supply Pressure − Return Pressure

For example:

CHWS pressure = 3.5 bar
CHWR pressure = 2.5 bar

Therefore:

ΔP = 3.5 − 2.5 = 1.0 bar

This pressure difference helps drive chilled water through the piping, valves and cooling coils.

🔄 WHERE IS ΔP IMPORTANT?

Chilled-water ΔP can be monitored at:

🔹 Chiller
🔹 Chilled-water pumps
🔹 Main supply/return headers
🔹 AHUs
🔹 FCUs
🔹 Critical branches
🔹 Differential-pressure sensors

⚠️ WHAT CAN CAUSE LOW ΔP?

Possible causes include:

❌ Pump operating below design condition
❌ Incorrect pump speed
❌ Control valves opening/closing unexpectedly
❌ Excessive system flow
❌ Incorrect differential-pressure sensor location
❌ Pump or strainer problems
❌ System balancing issues

⚠️ WHAT CAN CAUSE HIGH ΔP?

Possible causes include:

❌ Restricted flow
❌ Dirty strainers
❌ Closed or partially closed valves
❌ Blocked piping
❌ Excessive system resistance
❌ Incorrect pump control

👨‍🔧 HVAC PRO TIP

Don't judge chilled-water flow from ΔP alone.

For proper troubleshooting, check:

✅ Pump differential pressure
✅ CHWS / CHWR temperatures
✅ Water flow
✅ Valve position
✅ Strainer condition
✅ Pump speed
✅ Design requirements

Measure → Compare → Diagnose → Correct

🧠 PRACTICAL QUESTION

A chilled-water system has:

Supply pressure = 4.0 bar
Return pressure = 2.8 bar

👉 What is the differential pressure?

A) 0.8 bar
B) 1.0 bar
C) 1.2 bar
D) 6.8 bar

❄️ WHY DO HVAC DUCTS SWEAT?

Understanding Condensation in HVAC Ductwork

Have you ever noticed water droplets forming on the outside of HVAC ducts? 💧

This is a common problem in air-conditioning systems, especially in hot and humid climates like the UAE.

🌡️ What Causes Duct Sweating?

Duct sweating occurs when the external surface temperature of a duct falls below the dew point temperature of the surrounding air.
When warm, humid air comes into contact with a cold duct surface, moisture in the air condenses into water droplets.

🔍 5 Common Reasons for Duct Sweating

1️⃣ Poor or Damaged Insulation
- Insufficient duct insulation
- Damaged or compressed insulation
- Gaps in insulation joints

2️⃣ Missing Vapour Barrier
- Improper vapour barrier installation
- Unsealed insulation joints
- Moisture entering the insulation

3️⃣ High Humidity
- High outdoor humidity
- Excessive moisture in ceiling voids
- Poor humidity control

4️⃣ Low Duct Surface Temperature
- Very cold supply air
- Low supply-air temperature
- Operating conditions that cause the duct surface to fall below the surrounding air's dew point

5️⃣ Improper Installation
- Uninsulated duct connections
- Poorly sealed joints
- Exposed metal surfaces around supports and access panels

⚠️ What Problems Can Duct Sweating Cause?

❌ Water leakage from ducts
❌ False ceiling damage
❌ Mould and fungal growth
❌ Corrosion of metal components
❌ Indoor air quality problems

👨‍🔧 HVAC PRO TIP

To prevent duct sweating, always ensure:

- Proper insulation thickness according to design conditions
- Continuous and sealed vapour barriers
- Proper insulation around joints, supports and connections
- Adequate humidity control
- Correct installation and inspection of ductwork

Remember: Insulation alone is not enough. A properly sealed vapour barrier is essential to prevent moisture from reaching cold duct surfaces.

🧠 PRACTICAL QUESTION

You are inspecting an AHU supply duct above a false ceiling and notice water droplets forming on its external surface.

What is the most likely cause?

A. High chilled-water flow

B. Duct surface temperature below the surrounding air's dew point

C. High fan speed

D. Low refrigerant pressure

Not quite.
Consider the relationship between duct surface temperature and the dew point of the surrounding air.

🔧 WHAT IS AIR BALANCING IN HVAC?

🌬️ Why Proper Air Balancing Is Important

Air balancing is the process of measuring and adjusting airflow throughout an HVAC system so that each space receives the required amount of air according to the design.

📐 HOW DOES AIR BALANCING WORK?

The basic process is:

AHU → Supply Duct → Branch Duct → Diffuser → Room

A TAB (Testing, Adjusting & Balancing) technician measures airflow at diffusers and adjusts dampers to achieve the required design airflow.

🧮 SIMPLE EXAMPLE

Design airflow for 3 diffusers:

- Diffuser 1 = 300 CFM
- Diffuser 2 = 250 CFM
- Diffuser 3 = 200 CFM

Total Design Airflow = 750 CFM

If actual measurements are:

- Diffuser 1 = 350 CFM
- Diffuser 2 = 180 CFM
- Diffuser 3 = 220 CFM

The system needs adjustment so the airflow distribution is closer to the design requirements.

⚠️ COMMON AIR-BALANCING PROBLEMS

❌ Incorrect damper positions
❌ Poor duct design
❌ Excessive duct leakage
❌ Dirty filters
❌ Incorrect fan speed
❌ Blocked diffusers/grilles
❌ Incorrect diffuser selection
❌ Improper branch duct sizing

👨‍🔧 HVAC PRO TIP

Don't simply increase fan speed when one room has low airflow.
First check:

✅ Design airflow
✅ Actual airflow
✅ Static pressure
✅ Damper positions
✅ Filter condition
✅ Duct leakage
✅ Fan operating point

Measure → Adjust → Re-measure → Verify

🧠 PRACTICAL QUESTION

A diffuser has a design airflow of 500 CFM, but the measured airflow is only 350 CFM.

What should you check first?

A) Damper position
B) Filter/coil condition
C) Duct restriction
D) All of the above

🔧 WHAT IS A DIFFERENTIAL PRESSURE SWITCH IN HVAC?

Understanding DP Switches in AHUs, Filters & Fans

A Differential Pressure (DP) Switch is a useful HVAC device that monitors the difference in pressure between two points in an air or duct system.

📐 HOW DOES IT WORK?

A DP switch has two pressure connections:

🔵 High (+) — higher-pressure side
🔴 Low (−) — lower-pressure side

The switch compares the two pressures:

Differential Pressure = High Pressure − Low Pressure

When the pressure difference reaches the setpoint, the switch can change its electrical contact status and send a signal to a control or alarm circuit.

🌬️ COMMON HVAC APPLICATIONS

1️⃣ Filter Monitoring

A DP switch can be installed across an AHU filter.
As the filter becomes dirty:
⬆️ Pressure drop increases
The DP switch can trigger a dirty-filter alarm when the pressure difference reaches its setpoint.

2️⃣ Fan / Airflow Monitoring

It can also be used to help confirm whether a fan or airflow system is operating.

3️⃣ Duct Pressure Monitoring

DP devices can monitor pressure differences between selected points in duct systems.

🧮 SIMPLE EXAMPLE

Before filter:

+250 Pa

After filter:

+150 Pa

Therefore:

ΔP = 250 − 150 = 100 Pa

If the DP switch is set to 100 Pa, the switch may operate at this differential, depending on its configuration and specifications.

👨‍🔧 HVAC PRO TIP

A DP switch should not automatically be treated as a direct airflow measurement.

For proper troubleshooting, also consider:

✅ Filter condition
✅ Fan operation
✅ Duct resistance
✅ Airflow measurement
✅ Pressure readings
✅ Manufacturer setpoint

Measure → Compare → Diagnose → Correct

🧠 PRACTICAL QUESTION

An AHU filter has:

Upstream pressure = 300 Pa
Downstream pressure = 180 Pa

👉 What is the filter differential pressure?

A) 80 Pa
B) 100 Pa
C) 120 Pa
D) 480 Pa
